A week ago I bought an old Starret N0 64 universal indicator to help find TDC (which is still in the post) and was going to use a degree disc to set the timing, but I thought I would use the Micrometre method as the thread pitch should be accurate and the device was sold as a 2 stroke timing tool. As long as I rotate the piston out of the way of the rod, turn down the 3mm and rest the piston against as it comes back up and set the points opening position with a timing light I should be ok.

I use telescopic bore gauges a lot which also relies on friction, so I hope the rod does not move back down. I will give it a try anyway.
I had the head, barrel and the two side covers vapour blasted as it leaves a nice satin finish and does not stain with dirty fingers like bead blasting but I cleaned the cases by hand as I never take the chance beads are left behind ,even if I clean the heck out of them.

I don't know how I missed it but my front wheel is 19 inches and not 18, can anyone say if the TS 250/1 had this size from the factory. I now have a spare tyre/inner tube. Expensive mistake
I will give it to the friend I am building this bike for.

Definitely came with a factory 18" on the front. Oddly enough I gave a friend a spare front I had lying around which also turned out to be a 19" - quite funny when he explained how long he had spent trying to persuade an 18" tyre to fit. Turned out a previous owner had fitted a 19" rim for greenlaning but never used it.

Aye, its no fun sweating over the wrong size tyre and I.ve not been caught out like this for 50 yrs so I'm glad I noticed almost straight away this time. The old memory is a bit suspect these days after a head injury falling off my T140 Triumph once too often and I'm sure the old one was 18 inch, but it was a total bastard to remove with levers and I had to cut it off in the end. I put it down to being a very old tyre but it might have been 18 inch.

Once I set the piston position I use the timing light method to the just opening position of the points and I did this yesterday, so here's hoping.
I don't know how they got the tyre on either as I have just found the note I made of the front tyre size before taking off the front wheel and it says 18 inch + 2.75.
I have had this bike for 10 years at least then sold it to my friend along with a TS 150 I recommissioned that cost the earth, and was going to be a keeper. I asked him to leave it with me to build the TS 250 engine as a gift to him and this is what iv done.

Since then I have developed a terminal illness and decided to spend more time sorting out both wheels with new bearings, brake shoes, rim tape, tubes and tyres. I also have new secondary chain, top and bottom chain rubbers and will have the plastic chain enclosure vapour blasted or renewed.
I am also going to buy a new exhaust system and may have the frame powder coated, the rest will be down to him.

Maybe I have it all wrong but I measured the rim by standing it on the table and measuring it from bottom to top at the centre line Rim edge to rim edge and it shows 19 inch diameter. I offered up a friends 3 inch by 19 inch tyre and my rim falls through it ?

Just had another look at the rim size and it is just under the 19 inch size and shows 48cm. There are no markings on the rim its self.

Well I have tried to fit the 18 inch tyre and there was no way it was going to fit it is so tight. I cannot get the bead even a third of the way over the rim and it just feels impossible and I have fitted a good few tyres in my time. Perhaps I am just old and feeble and will just have to leave it to my friend to do it or take it to a motorcycle shop for fitment so I can push it to my house and give it a good clean.
