let me add, that the German written by some Germans in the German fora (correct plural of forum) is on a parr with the English at the top of this topic. It seems to be some kind of age bracket thing and some 16-25 year olds seem to find it cool to write unintelligible rap-style language purposely improperly spelled. And I am not talking about typos or achronyms such as ASAIK or FWIW. Or about typical Americanisms like nite or thru, or cause, or xmas.

Right. There's also an Indian version of it. I recently joined xBhp.com after buying a Bajaj Pulsar 180. The forum moderators repeatedly ask (starting in the forum where you introduce yourself) that the member does not use the sms-speak ...but it persists; people are so tolerant.

nobody caught the improper speeling of acronym - or at least wanted to jump on me for it....

I wouldn't worry about the odd mistake mate - in my experience of forums (sorry, fora!) many people who speak english as a first lanuage don't spell or use grammar as well as you.

Although I should point out that 'speeling' should be 'spelling'...

A problem I have with full names is, when googled, my name comes up many times.

So, I find steve b-------- did this, did that, brought his daughter ---- to ---- showed up at the track with .... bought a new ----. I find this a bit disquieting to find others will know I will be doing what, on what, where and at what time.

That's a lot of personal information to have floating around, and you cannot pick and choose who reads it.

On proper English, I find most educated in Europe have a better grasp of grammer than Americans, even if their usage isn't always what we concider preferred, or if little words are omitted. And, folks like Bill J. seem to take more care to use good English than the casual American like me who only knows a little English, and no other language.

I have to admit that I often read grammatical constructions and spellings that I don't like very much. However, having studied lingustics. I'm careful about calling things "proper" or "improper"--at least for spoken language. There are complex and consistent rules at play which produce what are often called "mistakes". In written language, I'm not so sure. I see things in print I can't imagine anyone actually saying. I think there must be some disconnect somewhere in the encoding process.

As for spelling, it is an artificial convention that changes with time, although more slowly than spoken language does. But saying there is something called "correct" spelling, as if there was some universal, immutable law that governs how written symbols are used--well, that's something I have my doubts about.
Dictionaries merely document how people write and say things. Lexicographers (the people who compile dictionaries) do not claim to define what is and is not correct. So, I try to say "spelling I don't like" rather than "incorrect spelling", though, to tell the truth, the indoctrination from primary and secondary education is hard to break.
