Something to do on those long rides

Hi, I've just been to Phillip Island for the Oz MotoGP a few weeks back,5000k round trip,afew long stretches which get a little boring.So to keep the mind busy I do a little mental maths, like fuel consumption,how many revs the motor does /klm etc. Came up with some figures that were interesting.
My bike is a 2000 model Skorpion Tour, had it for 7 years and has done 105,000Klms.
Fuel consumption 20k/litre, total 5250 litres.
Revs / klm @4000rpm,144000, total 1,512,000,000 revs.
Wheel rotations, 3,516,280,000.
When you see figures like these you start to get some respect for the bike and what it has to do.
During this time I have serviced it approx.every 8000 ks. So it has had or had replaced,-
12 oil and filter changes.
6 sets of tyres (Continental- Contiforce and Road Attacks)
5 chains, 3 front & 2 rear sprockets.
1 set rear wheel bearings.
5 sets of brake pads.
1 set brake rotors.
1 waterpump seal.
1 ignition lock.
1 choke cable.
Looking at that list I have had a fairly good run with this bike.No major repairs, no breakdowns, motor still sounds as good as the day it was bought and uses very little oil.
So have a think about your bike and treat them with a bit of respect , we ask them to do a hard job.

Ha! That's what I do on long rides as well.

Once I start calculating my mileage in my head during a ride, I can't stop!

Wow, I'd forgotten about that. Around 1962 or so I was driving a Bugeye Sprite (Frogeye to you guys over there) across the southern US. Leaving Birmingham, Alabama, at about 2am, the next gas station would be some 200 miles away. I got to calculating how many times the ignition points were going to have to successfully open and close at exactly the right time and broke out into a cold sweat at the answer of 390,000. From that time on I concentrated on the rhythm made by the tires crossing expansion joints.

What a fascinating post!!! Long rides'll never be quite the same again ............. I'm already a mechanical paranoid - this is REALLY going to help!
