Hello!....and help with an import

Hello all.

A quick introduction - I'm a complete newbie to the world of MZs, but I'll shortly be 'inheriting' a Skorpion traveller from my girlfriend's dad as he's sadly no longer able to ride it due to dodgy knees.

The only problem with that is that it's currently in France and I need to go through the rather Kafkaesque beurocracy of importing a vehicle and registering it with the DVLA. It was actually originally sold in the UK, but the V5 had to be surrendered when it was registered in France - so to prove it's legal I need something called a 'certificate of conformity'. I've been told the best place to get such a thing would be the current official MZ importer for the UK, but is there even one any more?

Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Hi,

It should be fairly easy to import a bike from another EU country into the UK. I take it you've got the French registration document (carte grise) for the bike. Without this, things could be very difficult.
As the bike is over 10 years old, you should contact DVLA and explain what you want to do. https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk
The British importer at the time of the Skorpions was BSA Regal http://www.bsa-regal.co.uk/ so they should have copies of any certificates you might need. They current spares supplier, Grahams Motorcycles, http://www.grahamsmotorcycles.com/ might also be able to help.
Really you should only have to change the speedo to one with mph, and the headlight for one that dips to the left to get an MOT, (assuming these were changed when it went to France!)

or if your not fussed about the law and its costly red tape you could do either one of the list below

1-do all the ground work , sort out all the paperwork and conformaty papers, reciept of legal ownership exc
2- just buy a uk registered basketcase and swap the numberplate over,,

as long as you own both bikes and you reverse the plates if you ever sell , whats the harm ,
