1974 MZ 250 TS not shifter help!!

Hey guys new to the forum and the MZ world !! I've recently bought a 1974 Mz 250 ts when I got it home it was in neutral I click the gear selector either up or down and that was it it will not go into any other gear or back to neutral ??? The clutch cable hand lever adjuster is missing and the cable is loose!! really don't want pull this engine apart it's only done 775 miles any help or hints would appreciated

not being able to release the clutch could b part of the problem
and the low miles means a lot of setting so the clutch plates may be stuck together
adding to the problem

Thanks for your reply I got an adjuster and have a clutch fuction but it still NOT free wheeling while in gear (engine still spins when turning the back wheel with clutch is depressed ) and the gear lever is still stuck in a gear I have no clue ? I'm about to order parts from Germany ( gaskets piston and piston rings and other parts ) but really don't want to spend the money till it at least shifts again

you will most likely have to take the clutch apart and clean it up
before it will shift proper

bikes that set long time have problems

dirty carb and gas tank

the spring on the points looses it temper and float at higher rpm/udm ..
which has the effect of making you think the carb is messed up when it may be ok
change the CAPACITOR for a new one
the rings loose temper and do not seal good
give it a run but the crank seals are probably shot

and the tires are only good for pushing it around in the shop
also the chain cover rubbers are also shot if there not use grease on the chain
DO not use spray chain wax or lube as that will kill any life the rubber may have left

i think this bike may be one of the GANG OF 74
some one imported a bunch of mz bikes in 1974 to the usa
i saw 2 250 CC in 2003 still new in the crates in roanoke va
willing to bet there are still some out there waiting to be some ones barn find

Thanks for your help Dave I really want to fix it , it's a really cool bike !! I'm selling my 79 Harley and gonna ride this I like that fact there isn't 10 million of the same bike here in the states !!! I'm scratching my head how this side clutch cover comes off Ive pulled the gear selector off and the screws retaining the cover Also seen there is a circlip holding something where it appears to be a clutch hub I can pull a Harley shovel/evo apart but never pulled these things apart thanks again

You have to remove the Nut under the round cover with the 3 screws.
Leave the kickstarter in the clutch cover.

thanks for your help too Guesi i will try removing the cover now i see you sell parts for this bike in Germany do you ship too the USA? also have you ever seen the problem im describing ( not changing gears) thanks

And about your problem:
I think you first have to dismantle the clutch cover before you have more information.

It might be the clutch, it could also be old oil, a mechanical problem with inner clutch lever.
Does the gearchange lever return in a neutral position or is it "hanging down" after pushing it ?

When I bought the bike home it was in nuetral I clicked it it either first (down) or second (up) and now it Seam it has no gear the lever just moves up and down but not change any gear or back into neutral it feels like it floating
I understand about the shipping I will get a list of what I think I need and I will message U though your site I will definely need some items that are not here I think it might need a rebore the engine was stuck from sitting at the very least a new piston and rings and pin gaskets extra oh a new seat cover most definely !!

Just dismantle the clutch cover, maybe you will see more.
There is part we call "pizza slicer" , it looks like one of these. If this one is defect it could cause this problem.
It is under the big (68 teeth) sprocket that connects clutch to gearbox.

Hi, Hope you get the clutch sorted, my 77 TS 250/1 was sitting in the garage for 28yrs and the clutch was solid with some furry rust. Never seen anything quite like this type of rust before, so, it could be something similar. Incidently Dave was right to mention the main seals, have a look at my post (TS 250/1 main oil seals) and you will see what I mean.
Have a look on Ebay for the parts you might need could be cheaper. Take care Alan.

At that age and so few miles, as well as no smooth or useful mechanical action would suggest to me internal corrosion in the gearbox internals at least.
Until someone with any idea opens it up to some extent and has a look you won`t know.
Have you given it all a good drain and clean?
