Well iv got the bike at last, etz250. Looks very tidy and falsity lots of history and also the original owners manual and service book, only had a quick ride in the street hope to go out for a bit tomorrow. Came with a full fairing in the bike which makes it look so much bigger. Felt heavy on the steering not sure if it's just because it's a heavier bike then iv been using.

check front tire and air pressure
also get the front wheel off the ground and check the fork neck bearings
it may be ok but falling off hurts

i ride the rt125 a lot and the other bikes are very different

I think that the MPG figures are a bit optimistic 50ish on a run but less round and about. I would change the gearbox oil, and clean the tank out. I would put a fresh HT lead cap and plug. I would check the timing and the points and change all the individual fuses, check the carb settings, run it and see.
You can end up changing half the bike - I know I have done it and frankly what ain't broke isn't worth fixing. As someone said if the gearbox oil stinks of petrol then you need to do the seals. They are tough, reliable and a lot of fun.

You may find she doesn't like long inclines, the 250s were like that so you may want to lose a tooth on the front sprocket if that is the case. There is a chance that the exhaust will be all coked up, cheap enough and easier just to get another one. But ride it hard, don't pootle too much, they really like to rev and getting em hot keeps them clean.
All the best

Great bikes. I fitted a sidecar to the last one I had and was getting 55 mpg with a lightweight chair. The etz does have a reputation for being thirstier than the super five tho' . I am sure it depends on whether the engine is sound and carb and timing are spot on. Watch for sticking choke bungs and leaky crank seals. You can replace crank seals with the engine in with a bit of care. Best of luck with your adventure.

The things that people have said about fuse boxes and mechanical regulators are the accepted wisdom but................... I have run about a dozen MZ s over the years, both 6 and 12 volt with the originals with no problems - lady luck must have been with me!

Still havnt managed to get out on the bike much yet due to work and bad weather here. When the back brake is used the light stays on, unless I wobble the brake pedal. Hope it's as easy to sort out as my honda 90.

big or small the thing with a tail box is do not over load it
and make sure your rear lamps are still where they can be seen...

the factory rack for the 2002 rt125 with a box or cargo bag on it
can block the view of rear tail lamp
where i live there are lots of big pickup trucks and the driver sets up high
when he gets close he can not see my rear lights

Yes I agree had the same problem with my c90 as the rear rack goes over the rear lights and with a box on aswell obscures the lights very badly.

Nice looking example that is.

I would only say one thing though, you really should ditch the 'power pipe' exhaust and get a proper ETZ250 one, I say proper one as the 'Generic' ones sold for the 250/251/301 is more suited to the 251/301 with the slightly higher rev range. The older, 'proper' 250 one sticks out past the rear wheel more than the later ones.

The 250 really won't be done any justice using that pipe. I had an almost identical one on my 125, it was abysmal so I took it off again.

Conversely, I had a 250 pipe on my 301, that gave it loads of low down torque compared to the original shorter 301 pipe. I think the shortening was more of a fashion thing than a mechanical decision.

Dave.

Thanks Dave, yes the bike came with the original exhaust which is good condition but on the day a I collected the bike I completely forgot about it! So the seller is sending it to me by post at a cost, along with the bracket. Think the original will be a bit quieter to.
