race report

Postby phlat65 » Sun Jul 18, 2004 9:30 pm

well, I was almost the most fun I have ever had on a motorcycle!!

got to the track at 7:30, set up shop and registered. I removed my mirrors, taped up the lights, safetyed some stuff, added a catch can for coolant, and passed tech.

first practice of 10 min. went good, fastest part of the track was a long banked sweeper to the left, into a tight right, 60.5 mph on my max speed computer. lots of good turn combinations, and no jump in the dirt section. It was a sharp left onto a sandy off camber staight, small shicane into a grassy off camber sweeper, onto a ashpalt strait. pretty challenging, but proved to be the best place for me to pass.

second practice, I worked on getting some apex's down better, and on my starts..

Heat race: I was gridded 14th (4th row second from left) Brian in 7th. the start was scarry!!!!! very short straight into a left /right shicane, onto the fast sweeper. I think I was 12th or so. passed 4 on the first lap, and in the next 5 laps, got upto 5th! 2nd to last lap, low sided in the dirt, and lost 5 spots. finished the heat in 8th..

The main: got away ok ( outside 2nd row) kinda took it easy for the first 3 turns, did not want to tangle with anyone. started to pass people, slowly working up to 6th, and got locked in a good battle with a YZF450 with 17's for 5th, it took me 4 laps, but I got him in the dirt!! 3 laps left, there was a KTM, and the YZ trying to get me, I just put in some good smooth laps, and put some time on them!! finished in 5th out of 20, on a street legal, 375lb motorcycle!!! definetely earned some respect for the MZ!!

If I would have had better gearing, I could have hung with the 450's out of turns, but the MZ was very surprisingly fast compared to the big KTM's.

here are some pics.. I am #141, second in both the latter pics.

oh yeah, I lapped upto 12th in 10 laps...

the pipes are Ducati 748 cans, bought on e-bay for $25.00 US. the head pipes I made out of Stainless Bathroom grab rail. made the mounts out of alluminum and riveted to the pipe (I dont have a TIG). they are Really quiet, and help the power the same as a loud pipe. I have a loud open single can I made from a YZ450F pipe, and I like the power delivery with the duals better. It will loft the front easier in 2nd with them..

I will take some closeups for you after I clean it tomorrow in a new thread.
