MZ closure/1000S support/Emmenrausch

Postby zedhead » Sun Jun 22, 2008 3:53 pm

Just a few musings on a windy Sunday evening in the Midlands, UK.....

am I the only one who is a little concerned and saddened by the prospect of the MZ factory closure? Does anyone know more about this, like, is there a possibility of the company being rescued? I can't help being sad about it, having owned and ridden MZs (ETZ 250, Skorpion Sport, 1000S and 1000ST) since 1985 and wonder, surely there's something the MZ ENTHUSIASTS can do? I wouldn't mind buying into the company if it was an option, and I think/hope there are a lot more german folk would do the same.

Secondly, how many 1000S/SF/ST owners are there in the UK, and on the forum? Would it be a reasonable idea (for me, I guess) to discover the identities of the MZ 1000 owners and set up a mutual support network? Indeed, if anyone is selling a 1000S, it would be a good thing if the rest of the owners knew it. I'd buy another one as a spare! It wouldn't hurt if we could discover the parts manufacturers for the bikes so that we could buy spares direct (e.g. Sagem engine management, Nissin brakes, etc).

Finally, is anyone in the UK going to the Emmenrausch? I'm not sure if I'm going on my 1000ST (fun fun fun!) or in the van (free accommodation + buying a ton of spares)

Goodnight all

Karl

I'm saddened, not really concerned(as far as being able to do anything about it), as it seems a done deal. I speculate that the malaysian owners don't want to give up the MZ name, and/or allow the German works to use the MZ name. Hung Low wants to use the MZ name on their malaysian made stuff. Maybe the German entity can aquire the DKW name and continue? That would be cool. As some others have posted, just like other defunct brands, even though the plants shut down and no more bikes are made, the "following" will grow and carry the torch. :-D That MZ has hung on this long is very admirable, I think most companies like this would have folded long ago, MZ has had many lives, and the more I read about their glorious history, their ups and downs, the more it sucks for all involved: workers, owners, enthusiasts, etc. It really is an important player in motorcycling history, more important than most will ever know. All I can say is that it is sad. :(

I share your hope of the revival of the old DKW name, but its sad to see the end of yet another great name. The bloody greedy mediocraties that seem to run engineering these days have won again. An E-Mail to all the lads/lassies at the factory via j.koerners@muz.de may cheer them up a bit and even give them some incentive for some sort of management buy out (maybe).

Boilermaker, I'm a new member to the forum. I heartily support your desire to resurrect the name, but have gotten used to MZ existing in name only since purchasing a 1000S in '06 here in America. MZ left the U.S. market one month after my purchase. There was a rumor a while back that there would be a U.S. distributor but it never came about. I also thought of trying to purchase the marketing rights to the 1000S,ST and SF in the states. But it would take a lot deeper pockets than mine. Maybe some celebrity will come out and give it a go. I'll talk to Jordan if I see him in at the Indianapolis Moto GP in September.

Hi Zedhead

>> Indeed, if anyone is selling a 1000S, it would be a good thing if the rest of the owners knew it.

My 1000 S is on sale and has been advertised in the relevant section of this forum for more than a month now.

Hope this helps, ride Safe.
