Need help with an MZ Moskito

Postby texan_176 » Thu Jan 27, 2011 11:38 pm

I live next door to a kid in middle school who just bought a used MZ for $500. It is a 2003 model with about 350 miles on it. I am trying to help him get it running.

Anyway, I have worked on and repaired cars as a hobby for 15 years. Done it all...engine repairs, brakes, cooling, HVAC, etc...

I am not too familiar with stuff that goes on 2 weeks but the fundamentals are the same.

Anyway....this MZ has been sitting for 3 years so we drained the gas and oil, refilled, charged the battery, and checked the air filter.

It will start only if you squirt ether into the carb and will stay running about 15 sceonds until the ether effect wears off by burning off. The fuel feed is working as we checked it.

I am pretty sure the carb is full of gum and varnish plus if it has a diaphram that is probably hardened and stiff. Where can I get a carb rebuild kit?

Also, the bowl of the carb has a 6-8 inch fuel line coming out of it that drips fuel on the ground. I'm pretty sure that is not supposed to occur.

Any help would be appreciated. We are located in Houston, TX USA BTW.

I have no experience with the Moskito however the bike is only 8 years old and I would be surprised if you really need a carb rebuild kit. I have a friend that bought a Moskito in a similar situation and a simple carb dis-assembly and cleaning had it back on the road (hopes this gives you some encouragement!). Sounds like a classic case of the engine not getting any fuel. Likely the line that is leaking fuel is an overflow from the carb and you have a float needle hanging up on some gunk. Others with more relevant experience might chime in but I would take the carb apart carefully and do a thorough cleaning. Float seats (where the needle tip just touches) clean up real nice with a Q-tip and a very small amount of metal polish. Good luck.

tiny bikes have tiny carbs with tiny holes that hate modern gas
and these were made by cpi in Taiwan
lots of luck on finding any parts

Strip the carb. Its not complicated.

Modern fuel turns to jelly if its left standing in a carb for even 6 months.

Fuel dripping out the overflow pipe means the float is stuck down most likely.

Strip carb, blast through passages and jets and everywhere with carb cleaner aerosol, and it should start :D
