Help regarding buying Silverstar 500

Postby diecastben » Sat Jun 29, 2013 4:40 pm

:smt006 Hi, my name is Ben I'm 22 and im new to this forum,
I'm very glad I've found this gruop of people that can help me with my issue.

This is the thing, I'm about to buy my first motorcycle and I have an opportunity to purchase a 1993 MZ Silverstar 500 who has been on the road for only 4-6 years.
I really like the way this motorcycle looks and the price is just right for me, the only probleme is that where I live, wich is Israel, there has never been any formal import of MZ, and there are less than 10 of its kind in the entire country! for that reason there are almost no spare parts or even mechanics who really knows the bike.

My main question is how relyable are those motorcycles, and will it be easy to find spare parts online? Is there anything else I should be worry about?
I could easely buy a GS500 or ER-5 or even Virago, but those are'nt special, and boy I like SPECIAL!

Thank you for your help!

very solid bike.. but you will wind up doing all your own work on it
you will also need to source your parts from germany
it will help if you or a friend speak german
i have a bunch of info on the bike and have had a saxon tour since 2003
if you get it send me a pm with a real email address do not post your address in an open post
the spammers will bury you in spam mail

Great I will!

Also, when checking one of these, is there anything particular that has to be checked on this bike? any common known issues ?

vent hose from top of engine to frame oil tank probably needs replaced
there is a vent hose on bottom right side that goes back up to the air box
best to replace it
ask and i will detail what i did on these
the hose from the fuel tank to carb has a bad habit of getting a twist or kink in it shutting of or slowing the fuel flow
some have BING carb and others have dellorto mine is a bing

run fuel with no ethanol mine runs best on real gasoline about 90 octane
but it will run on the cheap stuff also if that all you can get

and to remove the seat on mine look under seat on each side about the middle
use a flash light you will see the bolts
