Tachometer/revcounter

Postby vicar » Thu May 28, 2015 2:58 pm

my revcounter has gone mad. A quick blip of the throttle results in a reading of 10,000 rpm. Whatever damps the needle has stopped damping. Can I take it apart and fix it myself every or do I need to buy an other one. I have the round type fitted to my bike...

most of the new units now are electrical and the weather takes a toll on them
a good clean up may help ..and it may have a capacitor that needs replaced

some of them were of low quality to start with

some days the one on my 2002 rt125 goes nuts other days it works ok

put a volt meter on the battery plus and minus and see if the voltage is stable

my tack was way off once and the voltage regulator was going bad
or maybe the battery /loose wires also

Well if it's already broken , you have nothing to lose opening it up. I would not try to pry the rim off, it is difficult to do, you risk cracking the glass and it is very difficult to reseal it after it. What I have done before is carefully cut the case in half horizontally ( I used a dremel) It is possible that the balance spring has become disconnected and you MIGHT be able to re-attach it. To put it back together I cut a strip of metal about 20mm wide, glued it inside one half of the casing using araldite so around 10mm stuck up the edge, let it set then glued the other half of the case onto the strip.

Or just bin in and buy a new one, but I love trying to mend the unmendable!

The MZ Miami (mzmiami) store on the bay has the speedo tach combo for $60 shipped. Pretty reasonable, imho.

Always have had a good experience dealing with the folks there. Their store in Miami is breathtaking to an MZ aficionado.
