MZ/MuZ Riders

Hello again, with the engine not running but ignition on, and lights off, if I squeeze the brake lever or pedal, the brake light comes on. No surprises there then, but I also get the side lights coming on too. Does anyone else get this happening? If not, it would suggest that perhaps my bike has a blown blocking diode in there somewhere....

some thing is wired wrong those work off the flasher
and it should not be getting power
pull the flasher and see what happens if it is still on something has shorted across one set of wires to the other

I would like to know where the flasher unit/relay is hidden as I was under the impression that it was now an electronic function and the actuator was contained within the instrument console.

Looking at the circuit diagram it would seem that boilermaker is correct in that the flashr unit is not a separate unit, it's part of the instrument console.
Zed, it therefore looks likely that your bike has a wiring fault between the braking and lighting circuits, your tail light probably comes on as well but you dont notice as the brake light drowns it out, it will also bring your instrument lights.
If you need points in the circuit tested for comaprison let me know.

Hi again, strangely enough, the instrument backlights DON'T come on with the brake light.

you guys are on your own unless some one want to loan me a 1000 s to play with
trying to sort electrical at a distance is hard enough but i have a feeling
i did not want a 1000s for the same reason i do not want a bmw made after 1995

the electrical systems on new bikes are starting to make JOE LUCAS look like he was ahead of his time!
(the wiring does strange things for no reason ) his systems did that 50 years ago

I remember "the prince of darkness" quite well, there is nothing like going around a blind bend in a stone wall lined road on after image! Strangely enough the stuff produced for marine and aviation use was quite good, I ran an old BSA on a Lucas marine magneto for a long trouble free spell. I agree entirely with what you say re modern wiring, low voltage DC electrics are bad enough without using cheap components and unecessary complications. Some of the AMF/Harleys were subject to similar problems despite the (usually better) quality of American electrics.. I bought a very nice VW Bora car some years back and the salesman was horrified when I told him to get all the alarms and interlocks removed before I would buy it.

my current VW new BEETLE is a pain in the electrical
i dont need electric windows and a clock in the head liner
and doors that lock them selves at 10mph
the big complaint is i cant carry my remote key in my pocket
because the remote will open the trunk when i do not want it open

like when i am walking away from the car
and the nut job is it will not open the trunk or passenger door if the regular key is in the switch
and no key slot in the trunk (rear bonnet} or passenger door

Hi again, the instrument lights come on with the light switch. It's all very odd, but if I ever get any time, I'll scrutinise the excellent wiring diagram I was sent! I just wondered if it is a common feature to all 1000S bikes, or just mine and Cam's. That way, I'll know if it's a fault or a design flaw!

do they still flash as turn signals
there are some bikes that the turn signals are on as marker lamps then flash
when you use the turn button the flasher turns them off to signal a turn

I am really confused by your display lights not comming on as they are fed from the same place i.e. D5a. Could you try and disconnect X10, the right hand switch gear and apply the rear brake, if the sidelights do not come on then the fault is in the RH switchgear, as this is a place where both circuits come together.

Hurrah! I've finally found out what causes the side lights to come on with the brake light - it is the LED stop/tail light that I fitted! Once I changed it back to a 'normal' bulb, all is well. I'm using LED side lights too, incidentally. I've also worked out how to get the main beam flash working without the daylight relay fitted, so that's the next job.
