Leaving out the coarse oil filter in a 660...

Postby FUTURE » Fri Nov 30, 2007 2:05 am

Tomorrow I am doing an oil change and oil filter change. I will also be cleaning out the coarse oil filter.

What would happen if I did not put this filter back in :?:

When I changed the coarse filter in my bike (99 Scorpion w/ 6k Kilometers) the filter had trapped some larger particles. Just a few shards, not enough to fill the sieve, but enough make it worthwhile. Oddly, the particles were plastic, not metal. I have heard the racing machine get much more in the filter.

The filter is a pain, and the whole set up is not well done. The thing to do is to leave it in place and clean it only every few oil changes.

I removed the whole oil line from the mounting down on the crankcase to the hose clamp that joins the oil line to this section that has the coarse oil filter in it. This meant I could take this section out and use the bench vice to hold it while I undid the banjo joint where the coarse oil filter is. Doing it this way I had no problems at all.

Here is what was on my coarse oil filter... One bit of metal and some black plastic type sludge... I would say that this has been cleaned regularly by the previous owners of my bike.
