High Tension EleckTrickery

This is from the MZOG for the 660 Minarelli/Yamaha motor, but it has some useful links and points to make. FYI....

hi,

my own preferences:

NGK D8EA is the best plug for the bike, even good enuf to race with. Don't waste money on sexy platinum or iridium plugs costing more than twice the amount. Don't waste money a "snake medicine" spark plugs or
leads like that "Nology" thing.

If you are worried about disturbing other car radios, use the DR8EA. Specified for most slightly older Ferraris like the Testarossa...

I've tested plugs for NGK long term and the newest iridium plug is good, but has no benefits for us. Maybe in a new R6 engine...

And I have tested out of curiousity Champion, Denso including the very expensive iridium racing plugs and found no advantage at all. I have not tested BERU because they make no plug in the necessary heat range.

You can keep an eye on the OEM lead and when it gets unduely stiff, replace it with a new NGK lead. The big bike stores over here in Europe have them, so-called racing leads, on stock. They are red instead of black and are of better quality isolation material.

More modern leads do not work with the Denso coil in the MZ because it needs a copper core to be turned onto the screw - very old-fashioned. Of course, you can fit a better coil and then use an uptodate automobile wire.

I am partial to BERU

and use such a power cable together with a SilentHektik coil in both the Tour and the Racer.

compare the data of that coil with that of the Denso coil found in the MZ

http://www.silent-hektik.com/Zub_Denso.htm

not even half the spark! I also have leads from SilentHektik in use in the Mondial, the BSA and the Bimota.

The racer uses a SilentHektik ignition:

The racer now uses a DR8EA because the quickshifter is allergic to electronic "noise." But up to this year, I have used D8EA.

Which battery? for me no question, "Hawker" SBS8.

http://faq.f650.com/FAQS/BatteryFAQ.htm#Hawker

http://www.dmstech.co.uk/hawker.htm

I have them in all three bikes. The "normal" batteries are useless in my Tour because there is no decompression lifter in the cam. Usual batteries can't even turn the engine over. Beyond that, the Hawker lasts longer, resists vibration better, is unspillable and charges faster.

Gets the SZR started even when it has been standing for weeks. I just replaced the oldest SBS8 with a new one after 8 years. It still holds a charge but the demands in he Tour was too much for it if the thing didn't start immediately. I will use it as backup battery for the constant loss battery ignition in the racer.

But 8 years of constant use, summer and winter and not yet dead makes even an expensive battery cheap in the long run. In the picture of my toy you can just see it hanging on its side under the airbox:
