Any suggestions on troubleshooting a speedometer on the SilverStar? I took a ride and after a stop it no longer registered speed or mileage. Thanks!

very likely its the speedo drive cable that is broken, it runs from the front of the rear sprocket/chain cover forward to the speedometer.

Thanks. I haven't had time to run that down yet, but assuming it has failed, any ideas on sourcing a replacement? (I should have a spare from my other bike but am planning on getting it back on the road later this fall...)

the bakalite chain guard at the rear of the silver star looks like the same unit as is fitted on all the ts's & etz's so the same speedo cable should fit it,

I know these people stock them

Thanks, Trog. I may reach out to the Miami folks with the help of my Cuban translator. Apparently there are a ton of old MZs in Cuba and this guy seems to have quite the parts stash for the 250s.

I assume you mean the folks down at MZ Miami. I've dealt with these guys a few times and have had nothing but good luck with them. They have a pile of new/used stuff and ship pretty quickly. Thumbs up in my book..

Before assuming its your cable, I'd disconnect the cable as it goes into the rear axle. Spin the rear tire and make sure the piece the cable fits into turns w the tire. This will tell you if its the drive gear coming out of the axel or the cable itself.

Hope this helps

Ryan

Thanks guys. Its worse than expexted. A sprocket bolt broke and boogered up the pinion drive. Looks like miami is the best option to. Replace the cover and drive. Fortunate to have a spare from my other bike...
