Little MZ Content: CCM 604

Yesterday I went to a vintage motorcycle swapmeet fully committed to not buy anything unless it was something for my MZ Saxon Tour engined ATK 604 project. Didn't even drive the van up so I wouldn't be tempted. That plan went right out the window as soon as I saw this CCM 604e Trail sitting there for sale at $785. Walked around a bit to think about whether I should buy it or not and how it would fit into my plans if I did. Decided to pull the trigger and gave the seller a deposit, will pick the bike up on Tuesday. Comes with all of the "missing" bits and some spares as well. The bad, is it has no compression.

The engine is basically a larger version of the Rotax 504E used in MZs and nearly identical to the one originally in my ATK, so engine parts are no mystery. Seems to be pretty good parts support via the internet for the rest too.

Still trying to find contact information for CCM though, I don't have any documentation that tells me what year the beast is and I'd like to know. If anyone in the UK has any contact information for CCM, I'd appreciate it if you'd pass it along. Thanks!

Hi

The cambelt is SO easy to change as well-15 minute job on the MZ.

I thought Rotax engines were very popular in Flat track racing over there.

Photos from today here: http://www.antietamclassiccycle.com/ccm_604/

The compression issue is the cam belt - a bunch of teeth are stripped off it it. Could be a combination of not changing the belt often enough and the engine having heavier valve springs. Next on the agenda is a leakdown test to see if the valves took a hit.

Hi

I seem to remember that the Rotax is one of the`clever`designs that doesn`t wreck to valves if a cambelt breaks/slips.

Fingers crossed, you might have got yourself a real bargain. :)

Cheers

they will if a high lift cam has been installed that makes the lift tooo much

and they like to strip the teeth off the belt if stiffer springs are installed

if you run it proper it makes a nice daily driver

ps the 504 is good the 600 rotax motor in the mz frame is way too much
for the frame .. i have rode a 600 in an atk and it is an animal but a bad idea
for the mz frame its just to much power

Well... As it turns out, it's not a 604 after all, it's a 350! 79.5 mm bore, six-speed transmission, Dellorto PHF 34 carb. Doesn't matter one bit to me, still has more power than my old '77 Yamaha XT500 and weighs a bit less! :D

SWEET that would make a nice runner big enough to do trips
right size to do town daily driving
ATK made one this size as well

Yep, six speed transmission.

Before I bought this CCM, I had been considering a late ('97-'02) ATK 350 that was on Craigslist down near Baltimore. But I already have an ATK and wanted something different.
