"reduced performance" version

I read something the other day about a "reduced performance" / "reduced output" version, something to do with German licensing requirements, and how the guy had bought one by mistake and had the dealer and MZ sort it out. I can't find that thread.

The bike I rode today, I was not impressed with the performance. Ok, it was just 1st-2nd / 1st-2nd-3rd-BRAKE in a big parking area, and the final gearing is high, but still. So I'm wondering if what this guy is importing is those "reduced output" models.

There must be some way of checking, something in the engine number or VIN ...?
...and I can't remember what it involved; what had been done to reduce the power.
.....?

The reduced power version has a restrictor plate fitted in teh inlet manifold for the right (CV) carb. You should be able to see it if fitted, its a thin aluminium plate. When fitted it reduces power to 33BHP.

yes! - i found the thread, eventually, by chance. you. but i'm not going to be able to get information re engine numbers / VIN from MZ Tech Service soon enough, and i won't be able to check the bike at the dealer. so i'd have to take a chance, and hope that it's easily removed.

To remove the restrictor you have to remove the 2 bolts that hold the right hand carb in place and then slide the restrictor out.

the performance of the full power version feels low compared to other bikes, but drop 1 tooth from the counter sprocket, and it wheelies on demand in 2nd, and it really livens up the acceleration :-D

i could see that for me i'd need to do that. really tall gearing.

then i noticed - in the gpr-racing.de exhaust videos that it had tall gearing. beautiful sounding exhaust.

anyway, if the restrictor is just a plate that can be removed by sliding it out, no problem.

:-D ya but a Harley is not a good comparison. i'll admit they're bikes, they're better than nothing, but that's about all. anyway, on an sm track, a KDX would blow them away.

33hp doesn't compare well to the DRZ400, given the weight difference.

phlat65, What does dropping 1 tooth from the counter sprocket do to cruising speeds. I know it will reduce top speed, who cares, but can you still cruse say at 80 MPH with and occasional blast to 90 for passing?

cruising at 80 indicated, puts you at about 70 mph. it will cruise there, but the revs are getting kinda high. I just swapped back to the stock sprocket for the winter, and I will say it is much more comfy at 70 now..

I know this off topic (maybe the topic should be dumb questions) but, I am a little confused by "cruising at 80 indicated, puts you at about 70 mph" are you talking about a stock bike, or would this be the result of changing the sprocket. Why would the speedo not read true both ways?

most stock speedmeters lie big time

take a gps unit and check one on a bike you have been going fast on
and see just how slow you have been going :-D

Wow, It might have been better if I didn't know this!

I run 2 speedos, a trailtech, and the stock unit. the trailteck is dialed in to within 3% (58.5 indicated = 60.0 MPH), and with the trailtech steady at 60 mph, the stock unit is at 68-69 MPH.
