MZ/MuZ Riders

Well I suppose something had to give in the end. It seems serious this time, a noise started in the motor about a week ago and gradually got worse, by Tuesday this week I could hear it even with my crash helmet on and wearing ear plugs. The noise is a rumbling sound that is dependant on engine not road speed so is within the engine/generator/primary drive and gets louder and quiter at tick over. It can be heard on teh overun, but not on acceleration but this could be down to exhuast and induction noise.
I stripped out the engine clutch case and removed the clutch and pimary gears, no signs of problems there. I then took of the alternator cover, agian no signs of teh problem there.
I am going to remove the engine unit this weekend and put in my spare (brought for £180 from EBay) and will then look deeper into the engine, as any problem further in the engine will require its removal anyway. It may be the cam chain, but I doubt it with only 26000 miles (40000+kms) and will post what I find.
I dont suppose anyone has any ideas on what it might be?

just a thought, but have you checked the cam chain tensioner?

my XT600 had a pretty good rod knock, it would go away under load, and if you dragged the clutch at a stop. about the same mileage too. but I think I only changed the oil 3 times during those 25,000 miles

Well I finally got around to taking the head and barrel off of the MZ Baggi engine and found teh following.

1.
Slight wear on teh big end, this suprised me because when I loaded up
the engine on teh rear brake until the motor stalled there was no knock.

2.
Therw is a lot of wear on the piston skirt ant the front and rear. It looks like I may have had a partial siezure.

So now its a search for parts to see if its worth rebuilding the engine. I will keep it anyway, just in case I get the not unkown gearbox problem. I Might end up looing for another spare engine unit to keep just in case. It might even be worth buying a cheap MZ with a 660 engine and selling the rest on.

Yamaha recommends to install a new piston after 40000 km. It is not necessary to grind (hope that's the correct word) the cylinder at the same time.
Maybe you should try this.

The guy who modified my Y-pipe built a really cool XR650L Supermotard and installed a 12:1 J&E piston in it. He says it really woke up the motor and ran fine on pump gas. He also installed Keihin smoothbores but that's a diffferent story.

Thanks for the help guys. I am also looking at standard +.5mm piston for a rebore. 1 of my contacts in the states reckons he can supply one complete with rings for $70 comlete with rings or £36.50 gbp. Plus P&P of course.

Well after looking further at the engine, I dont think it is a viable propostion to rebuild it. Just took a look at the inside of the oil pump. The working parts inside are scored to hell. This would explain the damage to the piston and may indicate wear to the rest of the engine gearbox internals.
Good job I had that spare engine. I have also been in contact with a guy who builds these engine up for racing. He is getting a bike in that is a good runner and all he really wants is the crankcases after a customer blew up his engine and is prepared to do a deal. As he rebores the engines to fit a big bore kit the barrel and head will be of use to him as well as other componants.
I am keen to have a spare engine as I use the bike a lot and if its off of teh road I have to use a Goldwing to commute to work and on the roads I use that not a good idea.

It never rains but it pours.
On Thursday, I was looking at the bike and noticed the state of the rear sprocket (Renthal alloy). I new it was getting worn, but all of a sudden some of the tops of the teeth were missing. Called my local shop and they had a chain and the sprockets for a Yamaha XTZ660 in stock, so after work I went and got them.
Got home and set about fitting them and all went well, except I noticed some play in the rear suspension. I traced the play to the bearing for the bottom of the rear shock.
Quick call to BSA Regal the next morning confirmed they had the bearing in stock. The guy sais I wasnt going to like the price though £51 for the bearing and the spacers and seals I thought I might need.
Also ordered a set of rear brake pads as they were getting a bit low.
The bearing arrived in teh post this morning (thank BSA Regal, less than 24 hours again) and have now fitted it.
When I ordered the bearing the soares guy first offered me the complete suspension arm - but at £150 I declined. He certainly knows his stufs, it would have been a lot easier to have payed this out. A lot less hassle and looing at teh rest of the bearings, while they are OK they will need replacing soon.

Lessons learnt,
1.When a spares man offers parts you think you may not need ask him why he made the offer.
2.It is worth taking the linkage apart every now and again to lubricate the bearings, unfortunatly not all of the bearings have grease nipple on them. I do a fair bit of off raod riding on teh bike and teh bearings without grease nipples were bone dry. All of the grease had been washed away.

Looking at teh bike I might as well replce the rear tyre tomorrow as its done to less than 2mm.
Although the bike has given me a few troubles recently, I am still keeping it. Might be tempted to part ex it next year for another Bagi SM though.

Tried to green lane on it once, it had a suprising amount of grip (could have been down to the weight giving lots of traction) and all went well untill I came to some deep ruts, dam cylinders jamed on the side of the ruts
Good job I had a few mates with me to help turn it around
