losing weight on the bike

Postby hksigman » Thu Jan 13, 2005 8:36 pm

Besides the stock exhaust system, what other parts can come off to lose some weight on the bike?

funny... not much really with out major surgery. headlight support bars, aluminum handlebars.

an alloy subframe with lighter plastic would be a major reduction.

maybe some lighter hubs, but how much good can it do? I don't mind the weight that much, I have a 125 for off-road!

lose it

Postby DAVID THOMPSON » Thu Jan 13, 2005 10:09 pm

1 look at the tools you carry and dont take too much
2 let the wife or girl friend ride her own bike that way if you fall off
she may be able to call the wagon if you hurt yourself
3 it adds weight but always carry a chain master link
a clutch cable and the little nipple in the handle to put it on with
nothing like riding home 300miles with no clutch
4 if on a tour ride dont take so much junk with you

quite a bit more really:

Cut as many brackets off of the thing as you can, get rid of all the bracketry at the front (it weighs a ton) and use an enduro type headlamp fairing and a supermoto mudguard (the front mudguard is a universal one anyway).

cut the rear loop out (leave the frame rails !)you will need to be inventive to re-fit the rear lights though.

Use alloy bolts where ever there is a non load bearing attachment.

Chaneg the wheels for a set of Talons (but you will lose the cush drive if you do this)
Change the standard steel handlebars for a lighter set.

Here's a baggy with most of the above done http://groups.msn.com/Rowmx/muzsupermot ... lbumlist=2

what bars are you using? they look very similar to my stock Tuono bars?
Any mounting mods have to be done for the bars to work?

You knuckleheads <jk> just for the record the stock hubs are actually LIGHTER than Talons. Yes they are.

SM diet:
- alloy handlebars
- Yamaha R1 front brake rotor (alloy center)
- titanium or cabon exhaust canister
- titanium rear shock spring - $$$$$
- tubeless tire conversion
- plus most of the things others mentioned already

I'd yank the starter and battery but it's no fun bump starting a big thumper at my age.

Sorry guys, but you are all talking about spending lots of dosh to save a few pounds. Most of us could loose the same amount off of our own frames a lot cheaper. :P
