general questions

Postby hksigman » Thu Feb 03, 2005 8:39 pm

My used 2001 Black Panther did NOT come with an owners manual so i have some basic questions. Please bare with me.

1) Size in US gallons of gas tank? Is there a reserve on the petcock(9 oclock position)? What premium gas are people running in their black panther?

2)Mileage people are gettin?

3)oil filter number?

4) how many quarts of oil? How to check the oil?

5) How many gears on a 2001 black panther (4 or 5)?

Notice backfiring when downshifting is this normal for the bike (it has a M4 pipe and was jetted).

iirc, 3.3 gallons...I might be wrong

When I rode up to the nashville supermoto, I was running the tank dry about every 90 miles...granted I was nearly WFO the whole time, trying to make it in time to see practice

Yahama part # 4X7 13440-90

best I can tell, just over 2 qts...I check it after the motor has been running with the bike on the sidestand..pull dipstick, wipe off, reinsert and check level...maybe somebody else knows the 'factory correct' method.

Last I checked, the 660 motors have 6 speeds.

I have the same pipe, and the same prob, but mine inst rejetted. I have heard that playing with idle mixture settings will cure this, but I dont want to go so rich that it loads up the plug at idle....changing the plug in one of these is a bitch for a thumper.

hope this helps

Hi

While I agree with most of the above I think you wil find the bikes comes with 5 speeds. Be aware that it is not unknown to have gearbox problems on abused bikes.

As for gearbox problems, all i have ever heard is that second can cuase problems, but as said, only on abused or hard used race bikes. I am not gentle with mine (although I do treat the motor very gently whilst it warms up) as I don't slam it down through the box at high revs-this is what I believe causes the problems in the first place.

General Questions.

Q.4. The prescribed factory oil check method is as follows: Placing the bike on a level surface run the engine for 5 mins. at medium revs. Then allow it to idle for 30 secs. Switch off. Dip oil in usual way. It is important to follow this method because with the "dry sump scavenging system" of lubrication the engine gives false oil level readings if too hot or if cold. Don't dip it when really hot ! It's dangerous as oil gushes out all over your hand. A good tip is to buy a Haynes Workshop Manual for the Yamaha XT660.This is the engine we have. It,s worth buying as MZ does not provide a Workshop manual.
