Starter motor

Postby bufallobiff » Mon Sep 15, 2008 7:42 pm

The manual says that the starter can't be repaired and must be replaced as a unit. Has anyone ever opened one up? Can brg.s and brushes be replaced? Occasionally I have to smack mine with a hammer to get it to spin.

sounds like the brushes are not in contact with a dirty armature
they can be fixed if you can figure out how to get them apart and back together
you some times need to be creative to get it done

yes brushes can be changed ,a little tip for you that we used when checking our brushes, becaue when you pull the center armature out of the starter the brushes all spring out (4) providing a very difficult task in replacing, so what we done after some time was to cable tie each of the 4 brushes in place holding them in their holder and not springing back out, so then slide the center of the motor back in and as it slides past the brushes it knocks each cable tie gently and voila!! lol job done
