Racing a 125?

Postby witttom » Fri Aug 12, 2005 9:39 am

Anyone roadrace any of the 125 models? I'm really curious.... I've considered racing my 125SM in the YSR Race League that I'm in (I race a YSR50) because it fits into three different catagories (Formal One, Formula Two, and 4-Stroke Motards). However, I don't want to put an end to its life on the street. The MZ125 models are a little big (physically) compared to some of the other bikes that it would compete against, but I truly believe the power of the 125 would dominate. I would love to find a dirt cheap RT125 that has been layed down or something, but mechanically in good shape, to put it to the test. The exhaust hangs a little low, but one could probably rig an SM/SX exhaust system to get it mounted up high (right?).

Any thoughts?

I certainly would NOT want to bore it out, as right now I fall under the 125cc limit in two of the catagories I would potentially race in. I think a stock 125 would perform better than many of the other modified racers. On the small tracks I race on, its not so much the top speed that's important as is the handling, ability to power out of the turns, and ability to take positions away from other racers in tight spots.

I just need to find a cheap RT125 to start off with first, because I don't (and won't) want to sacrifice my 125SM.

Looking over some of those websites... I'm seeing some interesting 125 models that I've never seen before. Hmmmm....

The RSII-125 is an RT125 with fairing, modded seat and high level exhaust (and a fancy paint job)

Racing MZ125sm

Postby rotus » Thu Sep 29, 2005 8:47 pm

I've endurance raced an MZ125 SM a couple of times. We have a very strong mini class in our roadrace org. I've raced several YSR 50s, a Yamaha TZ gp chassis with a CR80 motor in it, an MZ 125 SM and a Derbi 50 Motard. The MZ was definatly the most comfy, but not the best handling.

I would expect that you would get similar handling out of the RT model, maybe marginally better as it has a lower center of gravity, but is the same chassis. What people are doing in this class to make the SM turn in quicker is to mount 120s on the back and keeping the stock 110 size on the front. The MZ125SM that I just bought is running Power Race/Power Sport combo of Michilens. The bike I raced before was running slicks.

Hope this helped.
