i heard some people describe benefits of replacing stock bulbs with LEDs, for the lower power consumption and heat generation. does anyone here have experience with this to suggest the simplest part # for replacement, and opinion over all?

thanks

LEDTronics is the way to go. I've used them in my Daytona and am using one in my 625 SMC. They're a direct drop-in replacement. The radial 6-LEDs fill the reflective cavern very nicely (LEDs are very directional light, so the LEDtronics design helps out a lot).

Try to avoid white LEDs, as they don't produce the right light (blue tint to them), and your taillight will be purpleish, which is a great way to draw attention from cops. With the MZ 125s the rear lens has the clear space for lighting the plate, and LEDtronics have created a bulb to match.

I love them. Long life, low maintenance, lower power draw from the alternator, more resilient to vibes, and fast turn-on time.

I don't know if the MZ uses 1157 bulbs, however. One of my things i need to do is to check that out.

Thanks Drew.

i did some digging and found that rt125 uses type 12-21/5W-P25-2 tail/break light (hopefully its the same for SM)

and i found the 1157 one you mentioned here:
http://www.ledtronics.com/ds/aut1157m/

found a specs comparison here:
http://genet.gelighting.com/LightProduc ... 300v-1.pdf

looks like it is a compatible replacement!

i'll update once i get it.

hey guys, just wanted to add my experience. 80$ was too much for a tail light in my opinion, so i held out.

today i was at a motorcycle mall in Belleville, NJ and saw a led tail light 1157 for 10$ so i grabbed it.

installation was a breeze, and the LED has both the straight LED red stop light and the 90 degree white light to eluminate the license plate.

strangely, in standard mode the red lights kick in, and when you hit the breaks the white lights add in -
basically the reverse of what youd expect.

but it works out because as you ride your license plate is dim but visible, and the riding light is more visible than normal (always a good thing with cagers imho) and when you hit the brakes it still gets brighter to make the difference.

either way, $10 beats paying 80$ plus postage! :D

I have tried these, they are not nearly as bright as incandescent. However I do carry one in my tool kit. I've had to use it in a pinch on a dark road.

OSPRNG,

I've used these in the past:
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/ ... roduct=CAR
(look for "1157-R19W6 Motorcycle Tail LED bulb" 1/4 down the page.)

this one is a drop-in replacement and didnt require any voltage modification on a SM.
it also didnt have the reverse lights problem you described.

$12
