MZ RT125 Petrol tap

Postby Mozeley » Sat Dec 15, 2007 8:39 am

Hey Everybody.

First post on this forum, and I'm needing some help please.

I have a 2004 MZ RT-125.

I had a problem a few weeks ago where I left the Bike parked up outside my Parents House, whilst I was inside watching England lost to Croatia.
During the match my Dad and I had noticed an extreme smell of Petrol, and when I checked on my bike after the match had finished, the petrol was all over the floor. I took it to a Garage to fix it, they cleaned the Carb and it has been fine ever since.
The only issue I have now, is that the Garage said that one of the main reasons why the Carb was so dirty was that I left the Petrol Tap on constantly (it's not a Vacuum), specifically when the Bike was not running, and they advised turning the Petrol tap to off.
The problem I have, is which position should the petrol tap be in when it's off. There is a switch that can either be pointing downwards, or pointing to the left or right. On the left side of the tap it says "off", however the engine still runs when the tap is pointing in that direction. I'm confused, as I'm not sure whether the bottom of the tap should point to Off, or the top of the tap.

Has anyone got any ideas, please?

Cheers,

Moze.

hello and welcome :smt026
the old tall tail about gas shut off.......
if your running an old bike yes do so for safety
the curse of a /2 bmw was the leaking bing float tops
my wrecked 1995 saxon tour came back home Friday morning
on a flat bed truck ...the tap still on and no dribble..
it was gone 9 days and did not stink up there shop

the rt125 i have is 5 1/2 years old and it seldom gets shut off
floats leak from dirty seats clean carb ... clean out tank
make sure fuel line is in good order
and not kinked
now bike running nice if float level and fuel to air are ok
air hard to set on rt125 mine has been at 2 turns and safety wired for 3 years

the last best thing is a good fuel filter between the tank and carb...
i use the lawn mower type fitted to 3.5 to 5 hp push type gas mowers sold here (usa)
get a clear one so you can see the crud in side

in tht uk make sure filter passes MOT for road use
ar dave
there so cheap here there is no excuse to get stall by a dirty one

Great pic, Dave!

I had the same thing happen to me (posted the problem on this site about 2 years ago). If you look at the petcock, there is a small black arrow on the black plastic petcock, that points to the mode the petcock is turned to (ON, OFF, RES).

Mine occurred in a parking lot. Came back from a bit of shopping and the bike was sitting in a puddle.
Relax. You'll live longer.
