MZ RT125 Petrol tap

Hey Everybody.
First post on this forum, and I'm needing some help please.
I have a 2004 MZ RT-125.
I had a problem a few weeks ago where I left the Bike parked up outside my Parents House, whilst I was inside watching England lost to Croatia.
During the match my Dad and I had noticed an extreme smell of Petrol, and when I checked on my bike after the match had finished, the petrol was all over the floor. I took it to a Garage to fix it, they cleaned the Carb and it has been fine ever since.
The only issue I have now, is that the Garage said that one of the main reasons why the Carb was so dirty was that I left the Petrol Tap on constantly (it's not a Vacuum), specifically when the Bike was not running, and they advised turning the Petrol tap to off.
The problem I have, is which position should the petrol tap be in when it's off. There is a switch that can either be pointing downwards, or pointing to the left or right. On the left side of the tap it says "off", however the engine still runs when the tap is pointing in that direction. I'm confused, as I'm not sure whether the bottom of the tap should point to Off, or the top of the tap.
Has anyone got any ideas, please?
Cheers,
Moze.
