Starter clutch

Has anyone not had a problem with the starter?
Is this a matter of oil change intervals or other variables or is it just a very weak part.
I'm just trying to avoid the avoidable if at all possible.
Has anyone attempted a rebuild repair of the failed clutch or is this just wishful thinking.
Working on old British iron there are fixes that can be rendered.

R

Thanks muchly, I had a feeling the life was in the oil. The filter is a BMW F 650 I'm told. The rotella is mineral non synthetic? 20/40 is the correct weight?

do not run bike backwards in gear and let clutch out with a stopped motor you will pop it

both times i killed mine going up a hill and stalled on wet grass and let the clutch out to stop my self
as front wheel brake was not stopping me this ran the motor backwards against the sprag killing it bang....
