i cant find it explained in either of the manuals, but its featured consistently in any photos and technical drawings of the bike.



So, what is the purpose of this doohickey and is it a problem that the one on my bike is ripped off at the upper left?

That's a poor mans heat shield.In Germany they call it utilitarian...

where its located its to keep the person wearing flip flop shoes or sandals from having burn marks on his ankle

proper foot ware works better....
the night i had the wreck in DEC 2oo7 i was wearing a good pair of shoes.....as i usually do.
if i had been wearing proper BOOTS i would not now have a burn scar on the back of my
right ankle about 6 inches up my leg where the bike laid on me hot exhaust and all

dave, personally i only feel confident riding in pants. no matter how hot it gets outside, i'm not wearing shorts nor flip flops.
gloves, boots, jacket, pants, brain bucket. sharing the road with 'cagers' i wouldn't dream of wearing anything less.

but maybe thats just because i'm starting out. and with more 'flight hours' confidence grows and makes comfort a higher priority...

I was last in the states about 18 years ago, but when someone was banging on about a "fanny bag" I thought to myself...this is something I need to see...................


Needless to say I was dissapointed.

oh god, I almost panicked and thought the Yam 660 motor suddenly developed a case of KLR650 envy and developed a "doohickey" problem too. Alas, our motor is reliable.. whew.

hey guys, as you saw in the original pic, it was snapped off at one spot. it was this way when i got it from the previous owner..
well, yesterday i looked over the bike after a 3 hour ride, and saw that it is now completely gone.

i'm guessing it snapped off due to expansion from heat, but does that mean that the pipe is running hotter than should be?

how can i deal with the over heating?
is there an after market heat shield for this?

shop that welds stainless should be able to make a new one from bits in a good left overs box

but what about the fact that it happened in the first place?
is it any indication of unreasonable overheating, ie something that i should address?

it just seems that if this was 'normal' the heat shield would have been designed to handle the expansion better..

vibration will make anything break
