Slowly getting to the point where it will be a runner. With the ignition on I was surprised to see that the headlight didn't come on with the pilot light. Does the bike need to actually be running before the headlight works or am I missing something?

Thanks everyone

Light should be on with key.

Update: No everything else works with the key, the headlights come on with the engine. Which brings us to the next thing getting the bugger to run an idle as opposed to only on half choke

mine comes on with key
then goes off when cranking
comes back on when you stop cranking
engine can start or not start it always goes off when cranking

factory may have wired them different
mine was made early 2002

To help you along with the carb I have the original owner's manual for the MZ rt 125.

First I'd recommend taking it off the bike and cleaning it out if you can, this should clear anything that may be blocking the flow of fuel or air wherever necessary. When doing this also clean the air filter and the box too. Then the idling air screw should be screwed in till it beds, then screw it out 1/4 turn - 1/2 turns out as thats factory spec. Idle should be set at 1400 - 1500 rpm according to the manual but I prefer it idling a little higher.

I'm going to be doing a full service on my RT 125 tomorrow so if you need any more help just ask.

I had a similar problem with my idle

Turned out to be that the carb slider (not sure its actually called that) had been worn by the idle screw so it was high idle until the slider dropped past the the worn section to rough tick over and nothing in between.
I plan to change mine but in the meantime I have had to use the adjuster on the throttle to give an even idle.

this is a proper bodge but it worked :)
