Torque specifications in repair manual

Sorry if this is a dumb question but in the repair manual it gives tightening torques as X+Y Nm with the +Y figure written in superscript. I assume this means in a range of X to (X+Y) Nm but I've not seen torque values expressed like that before. Is that correct?
Where it gives X Nm plus Y degrees that I get and so on (or in the sidestand case so many NM then back off 90 degrees!) but I am curious about the notation used.
Are there any other oddities I should be aware of in the manual that people have found confusing?
Thanks,
liz
