MZ 500 twin?

These are two MZ 250s coupled together aren`t they?

Certainly the barrels and heads suggest it. Got any further photographs - wondering how things like the clutch and gearbox fit into this as it raises more questions than answers.

No that`s it. Is was a random photo that came up on Pinterest.

This engine was at the DDR museum in Berlin. There was also a 500cc flat twin, like the BK350. As far as I can remember they were developed in Zschopau.
