MZ/MuZ Riders

Hi Folks,

I need an engine for an MZ ETZ250 and would like to know how to identify the correct engine as I believe they look very similar to the earlier model.
I think they should have oil feed pipes for the Mikuni system but earlier models had no external pipes?, Anything else to look out for?

I thought only the very early models had no external pipes. Are there any other ways to tell the differences.

The luxus bikes from 1981-1983 had it internally.

So there is no way to tell between a late ts and an etz motor?
I want a motor with an oil pump.

I think most of the answers above are concerned with the differences between ETZ engines of different ages. If you're more concerned with telling the difference between a TS and and ETZ engine, that is much easier, although at first glance they might look similar.

The TS engine had a much more rounded crankcase:


Whereas the ETZ crankcase is a little more "brutal" with a noticeable step towards the rear:


The covers on both sides of the two engines are also very different from each other. Another difference not immediately noticeable is that the ETZ barrel and cylinder head both have more fins than the TS items.

To my knowledge, MZ never made a TS engine with an oil pump.

When it comes to the differences between ETZ engines, the main thing I think you are looking for is the presence of an oil pump? An oil pump engine will have a round cover with two screws fitted to the primary drive cover, behind the rev counter drive/clutch nut cover:

It's far more likely that any engine you come across will have external oil lines, but it doesn't really matter either way!

An non-oil-pump ETZ engine won't have that extra cover on the primary drive cover, but I think your chances of coming across one of those in the UK are relatively slim:

No problem. There were some other changes made during ETZ production (things like a slightly different barrel, electronic ignition, regulator and rev counter) but I think all these parts should be interchangeable. Certainly, I have mixed and matched without any problems in the past.
