Rusty Tank

Hi (restoration virgin here again!)

A quick inspection of my project (MZ TS 150...and not MZ ES 150 as I stated in a differet discussion...thanks manumensa) shows that its all in fair condition except the inside of the tank. The bike has been sitting for at least two years with pertol in the tank...and the last MOT was 2002 so could have potentially been sitting for 6 years with pertol in the tank! As you can imagine there is a lot of rust in there !!!!

This is one of the jobs I want to tackle now so that I can halt the rusting before it gets any worse...I have been reading up on the different methods and it seems as though there are two methods highly recommended and one to aviod:

Aviod the Kreem method...some say that the coating used afterward is rubbish!!!

Go for the POR-15 kit method (chemically remove the rust) or the electrolysis method (plating in reverse..see http://650rider.com/Content/pid=6.html). Both method would require the tank is seald afterward and both methods use the sealant from the POR-15 kit.

Has anyone experience if celaning rusty tanks and what would be your advice ???

Thanks
Andy Ekins

Hello Andy!

I found a homemade method of rust tank clean http://www.lamaneta.com/irautza/reparacion_deposito.htm
He use vinegar and after two days a chain or nuts and shake the tank until the rust out. If you are interesting I traslation to you.

You can buy a new rebuild tank http://pieces-mz.com/depsitodegasolinat ... -1094.html
TS models are classic motocycles but no difficult to found new or good second hand parts.

The last year I bought a old ETZ 250 to restoration. A lot of rust in tank , I preferred buy a second hand tank with no deep rust. Rust isn´t my real problem, I haven´t time for work in the motorcycle! :(

Best regard, Manuel.
