ETZ251/301: Failure of Charging/Rev counter

This has happened on my 1995 251 and a friends 301 Saxon Fun. Both have failed to charge and the rev counter has ceased to function at the same time. Both are under 15,000 miles so I suspect this is not uncommon. Both have the later system that I understand combines the alternator/charging and is not easily available. Has anyone had one fixed anywhere. The bikes run but do not charge or show revs.

Tony, I'm no electrical expert, but have you checked the obvious things: the alternator brushes, all of the fuses (Including the contacts), and the cleanliness/continuity of the multi-pin connector(s) which is near the front of the tank and seems exposed to the elements? Looking at the wiring diagram, the rev counter seems to get its impulses directly from the rectifier/regulator which seems to send a pulse to the instrument for each revolution of the alternator. If all the other checks are ok, then it may be that your regulator/rectifier is shot. Whether an automotive electrical engineer would be able to check the diode board out, I don't know.

LATER EDIT:
I would check the brushes first, I think that these supply an initial small current to the alternator to 'excite' it, after which it will supply the full charging current. Without this initial excitation, it will not generate any power.

Thanks for that Keith. Everything is clean. Bike runs well but no charging. Agree about Ced. Might have to get his address and purely by chance breakdown at the bottom of his drive.
