Removing the speedo fron the housing

Postby droy » Wed Oct 31, 2007 11:20 am

I'm remiving the speedo from the housing on my Sport and replacacing it with a bike speedo. I can't figure out how to remove the speedo without cutting off the miles reset nob. Suggestions?

Thanks

Doug,
Have you removed the dash? That is easy..If you're replacing the speedo.why not the
tach too..Then all you have to do is make up a panel with the bike speedo and tach.
or get a combo like the Acewell 3700..
On my Sport,I have a Sigma BC400 speedo that i mounted where the clock used to go.
I just glued the speedo mounting clip on..very easy..my Speedo(mechanical) had been
disconnected years ago..the drive unit was replaced with a titanium axle spacer..
old race bike..this winter I'll freshen it up with a new dash panel with idiot lights
new tach and the Sigma speedo.
I would have thought the speedo could be taken out of the dash panel easily..is it possible the reset unscrews?

As speedo issues are dear to my heart at present also, I've been wondering about this and the legality (need to fix my current one before I can go talk to the police about it!).

The issues that come to mind:
  • does the original bike certification imply a speedo of a certain type and how does this change the license status?
  • do bike speedo's have an odometer? If not, is it legal to lack a working odometer?

I'm sure the various laws vary not only nationally but possibly to the state level within each country.

In UK as long as you have a speedo that's all that matters, a working one at that, even then it's irrelevant, if your speeding you'll get pulled for speeding, there is no way a police officer could tell if your speedo works unless he/she rides it! It's just an indicator to tell you how fast your going...that's it! :D

the speedo isn't even checked as part of the mot even if its obviously got a fault you can't get failed for it.
