axle sliders for 125sm

Postby 125SMash » Mon Nov 05, 2007 5:49 pm

I see plenty of coverage of this for the 660 bikes but not enough for the 125sm (answers might apply to both, but i don't know)
so here goes;

with mz being gone form the states, i'm only more paranoid about dropping this bike and having to order parts from abroad so trying to make it as crash proof as possible. i already ordered some KTM handle bar guards/sliders, and would like to install skateboard wheels as sliders on the front and rear axle.

one of the methods i've seen on line is to drill through the axle and insert a skateboard truck, this seems like sacrificing structural integrity to me (and i'm not 100% sure my local shop can do this accurately), so i wondered if there is something already pre-made for the 123 that i could purchase and install.

i think this id even be willing to order long distance if the price/tariffs don't double by college loans.

anyone?

hi,
well i don't really have a solution to share,i just have this idea.

One thing i've noticed is that the swing arm doesn't touch the ground on crashes. So i don't think rear axle sliders will do any good. This might be caused by the 125sm wider "rear end" :-D . Looking at the pillion foot pegs area, considering the protruding shape of it, i think that it's one of the earlier things that touches the ground on a low side crash.

There is a hole on each side on the rear peg mounting area. My idea is to mount a slider there(skateboard wheels will do)...but the catch is the pillion won't have anywhere to put his/her feet.(Maybe on the slider itself??) :? Also there is a question of subframe integrity. They need to be strong enough to withstand a crash and not bend.

My forks never touched the ground on a fall(know on wood),but maybe due to my wider handlebar. So i don't see the importance of installing axle sliders on them.

my 2 cents...

i've considered the idea of replacing passenger pegs with sliders after someone suggested it in the baghira section.
i think the frame mounts on the SM are too weak to work and will likely ben..

i did find some frame sliders on mz-faber.de
http://www.mz-faber.de/MZWeb/catalog.as ... a1c4e6d50c

but they very small and ineffective for the reasons you mentioned.

i did just install handlebar guards which will hopefully provide the bike with a 3rd point of contact (in addition to the tires) and save it some damage)

i'll also look into the possibility of mounting a slider on the engine somewhere so the point of contact is more towards the center of the bikes body and more effective..

what kind of handlebar guards do you use ?

good idea. We just need to figure out the best point to mount the sliders. also the size/length of the slider.

oh,i'm not using any handlebar guards. i'm using alloy oversized bar...so fall the asphalt has taken a few bites on my handlebar...but it's still good. :smt101
