Hi, I'm also a new MZ owner. Got a 1998 Mastiff last month with about 8500 kilometers on it. For those interested, it has a headlamp unit off an early Triumph Bonneville. The originals were much the same as peeholes in a snowbank. I've been lurking around here and then a friend, frederickflintstone, got a Baghira, joined up and revealed himself, so here I am.

I'm kind of a scrounging sort and usually can source most anything...if I have time. So,here's the word on key blanks for Baghira/Mastiff. The Ilco number for a Volvo is bogus. I know, I tried it. BOY! It's close! but if you want it right without any hassle, go down to your local KTM dealer and buy a blank for one of the 950's. Probably about $9 each, pricey, but it's nickel plated brass has the rubber cover on it. Quality! You can also go online and find a cheap steel blank for a KTM if you can't stand having the rubber cover that says KTM on your MZ. Personally, I'm going to use the KTM key for riding and put the original key away with all the original docs. Seems a good bunch here to be around

Hi Dave,
The Ilco blank is VERY similar, but excessively long which is no problem, still it simply is a "rig" job and thus subject to problems, IMHO. I couldn't find a key code on the original key for my Mastiff without tearing the rubber cover off. I wasn't willing to do that, so I simply had a reputable locksmith here in town (who also comes to the house, unlike doctors) and test the key and adjust as necessary (which wasn't necessary). It's very possible that KTM and MZ key codes are alike, but at $9 a shot for blanks, I'll go with duplication. My intent was to preserve the original, in any case.

looks like it works pretty good to me. key is all the way in and the switch is obviously in the on position.
if you own an mz you had better get used to "rigging " fixes if you want to ride the thing.

Did a little additional research on the key thing (hope this is the last post on it). Here's an interchange on the different bikes that use the same key as the Baghira/Mastiff. You can either source a key blank through a brand dealership or use the Ilco blank #X270-TCM1 via this list. There's no need to "rig" anything regarding the keys. If you're good with what you got, go for it. This is just for information I got off the Ilco website. Paul

After a very long hiatus from riding, I just ordered a set of tires and battery for the bike. hopefully I can have it back on the road by the beginning of May.
I have been going to sell this bike for several years and for one reason or another did not. I figure the bike will be easier to sell with fresh tires and battery, so I will see if I can have some fun with it.
