MZ closure in Europe

Postby stinkfeet2000 » Sun Jun 15, 2008 8:27 pm

First time user of this site. Own an '05 MZ1000S. Like it. Have put 22,000 miles on it. Not much info on line. Anybody out there know where to get parts? I have been getting oil filters from Logan's Motorcycles in Arizona but the last time I contacted them they said they were having trouble with MZ and wouldn't be supplying filters any longer. Their number is 480-962-1700 I just found out that K&N filter corporation U.S.A. makes a filter that will fit the 1000S. I ordered one (part # K&N-163) and it does look just like the MZ filter. I haven't installed it yet though, so not for sure. Will be needing a valve adjustment soon. Not sure where to get the shims. Local B.M.W. shop won't touch it. Said "drive it till it rattles" I'm pretty discouraged at this point as I just read on the MZ parts site(no parts) that MZ is closing their doors in Germany on December 31. Can anyone verify this as I may be wrong. Everything I read on the internet about the 1000S is three years old. I keep expecting to see Rod Serling ride up and say " you are about to enter a time and place where there are no parts --- no warranties--- a place suspended in time(2005)---- a place called ---------- THE MZ ZONE!!! Well welcome to the site at 22,000 miles i,d say you got your moneys worth ! Your riding free from here on !
I would say that you are one of very few,<less than 50 in the us with the 1000 mZ> :D That feels good right ?
When the guys in the UK have a hard time with the 1000 you know if you are in the US you are screwed.
Like the dealer said just keep riding it.Problem is when they made that bike they didn't outsource the motor. In fact i think it's the most MZ bike MZ ever made.

Either there are more than 50 MZ1000 in the USA or i have seen 1/2 of the 50 on ebay in the last year.

Have you had any trouble in the time you have had it ? Oh,i just checked and you joined today so i'm guessing you bought one of those Ebay bikes ? :smt005

The good thing is you can watch Ebay and get a backup for parts pretty cheap.
You're just left with yourself all the time, whatever you do anyway. You've got to get down to your own God in your own temple. It's all down to you, mate.

God I miss John!!! Well I guess I got my money's worth from this site. Finally got a pat on the back, well done mate!! There ARE others in the same boat. I was just posting the two problems I've had under electrical issues. Sidestand lock out went on the fritz and bike wouldn't start. Fixed by shop "under warranty" and invited not to come back. MZ vacated the U.S. one month after my purchase of 1000S. Problem #2 is low beam went on fritz. Hi beam OK(checked it me self with anohlm meter) fuse OK but it would be if hi works right. connections dry and secure. maybe switch. I'm really a mechanical idiot so may or may not tackle that myself.

Hey Stinkfeet,

I've been using K&N HP1002 filters as well as the occasional Mobil One M1-102 for some time (these fit the Chrysler 2.2 4-cyl cars of the 1980's) I get them from Advance Auto. No need to special order oil filters, those two are the best off the shelf filters, heavy duty construction and all, they do just fine on the old MZ. As far as the shims go, these motors only use buckets, which you change if needed. It was said at the time that adjustments would be reduced (same as Volkswagon engines setup) this way. I've got over 25,000 miles on mine and have checked twice and still within spec so I guess they knew what they were doing. Hopefully yours will be within specs. :smt006

Thanks 66, maybe things ain't as bad as they seem. Where do you get the buckets for the valve adjustment? I just signed up for a track day(my first ever)at Homestead, Fl. June 29 See how the old MZ likes it.
