Ride magazine-Aug 08 page 6-Shall we have a whipround for MZ

Postby djsbriscoe » Sun Jul 20, 2008 7:00 am

Hi,
I've just bought the August edition of RIDE magazine. On page 6 (Who,What,When,Where,Why) they
Suggest having a whip round for MZ. The article starts by stating that MZ appears to have gone to the wall
and then restates a brief MZ history that we are all familiar with.
It's quite a positive piece really.
Sorry I cant post a link or scan the article.

David.

Could be interesting, in fact I may even buy a copy myself for a change. (generally I stick to the classic bike mags as the modern stuff is too full of plastic for my tastes - narrow minded? No, one track minded!) ;-)

Just read the article in Ride, it's quite brief and hardly worth buying - cheaper to read it in WH Smiths then replace on the shelf ! The tailpiece in the Ride article about the late, great Alan Shepherd is simply not true as he did not sneak the MZ racebike past East German borderguards at all. I knew Alan well, and was in East Germany with him at the old MZ factory in Zschopau back in 1987 (where I also had the priviledge of meeting Walter Kaaden amongst others) and he often used to visit me at home. The full and amazing story of how Alan got the MZ to Daytona and subsequently won is published in the now out of print book 'MZ - The Racers' by Jan Leek. Well worth reading if you can get hold of a copy. (Yes I have one - signed by Alan - and no it's not for sale!) ISBN 1-872982-01-8. Six fifty publications - 1991.
The MZ featured in the Ride article is a TS250 Standard 4-speed with 12.5 litre petrol tank and is identical to the first MZ I ever owned back in 1975, though mine had flashing indicators fitted. (Wow, what will they think of next..........)
Passed my driving test on that MZ and took the best looking girl in the neighbourhood to Silverstone for the 1976 British Motorcycle Grand Prix - much to the annoyance of my mates who were all still on L-plates !
Still got an MZ 33 years later (Mastiff).
Regards,
Simon Greenwood.
