brake and clutch levers

Postby scout18 » Sun Aug 03, 2008 12:26 pm

I am looking for front brake and clutch levers for my 98 Mastiff. My 1st priority is of course a brake lever. Does anyone know for certain which levers are compatible. I chased a couple of leads where the levers were supposed to be KTM OR BMW but without success. The clutch lever is still intact but bent a little out of shape after a little clumsiness in the shed and feet not down and stand not down at the same time. The Brake lever broke at the track. Still usable to get me home but not able to pass a tech inspection. The other end is buried in the dirt of the local supermoto track (Pats Acres).

Perhaps another thing worth asking Fred about? I know he's 2-stroke oriented but it may be worth a try... I'll let you know.

I've tried a couple of times to contact Grimeca, but no response. They seem to be very focused on bicycle brakes these days.

I've also been all over the rest of the web looking for something compatible, so I can find a shorty to fit under my handguards, but have come up empty. (BTW, if anyone needs a brake lever for a Kawi KLX 250, a KTM LC4, or an older model Yamaha YZF, let me know - got a whole pile of different ones I've tried.)

I think our only hope is to have them made, or modify our stock ones. I've got a stock lever on order so I can take a shot at shortening mine and re-welding the end-ball on.

BTW, if it's the clutch lever you need, there are a plethora of available replacements. Many of the 90s era KTMs used the same Domino clutch that our Baggies and Mastiffs use. You can find any sort of clutch lever you like. I found a polished shorty from MSR for US$10.00.

I am thinking that it would probably be cheaper to just get a different clutch lever and perch for that side and just not crash on the brake side.(grin) Convert the brake master to a honda XR or Kawi KLR . They ought to be about the same.

A couple of guys have replaced the front brake master cylinder with a unit from a KTM LC4 or Duke. There are probably lots of different master cylinders that would work. I'm keeping an eye out for a used LC4 M/C to try out, just for the broader lever options alone. The 2000-ish LC4s look to have a caliper about the same size as my Baggy and it has the same size disc.

Maybe someday if I have an extra $150 lying around, I'll just go buy a new one.
