Somebody gave me an MZ 250!

It looks in excellent shape with about 100 miles on it. Seems as if it was stored well and was ran a year ago, but the spark plug is now missing and it sat for a month or so without the plug. It is in excellent condition and I believe it will run with little preparation. He also has a red one with 49 miles. I expressed an interest and he gave it to me. What I would like to do in return is get both in good working condition. Is it belt or shaft drive?

1. Light rust in tank
2. Missing side cover
3. battery is there but probably not working
4. I dont know what fuel/oil to use
5. I dont know what fuel oil ratio to mix
6. Tires are good
7. Cracking on belt/shaft drive housing
8. Is it kick start only?

I'll use the search and learn what I can but I know so little about it I'm not even sure what to search for.

Ok thanks, I updated to show I live in the southwest US. I did talk to a guy today and he told me it had an enclosed chain, the owner thought it was a shaft. Enclosed and rounded I thought belt or something.

The guy today also said he thought it 2 stroke oil injection but wasn't sure, and I dont want to put gas in until I know. He thought it also doesn't actually need the battery to start and run? He said it needs oil on chain/in the housing maybe?

Spark plug ISOLATOR ZM 14-260
NGK B7HS or B8HS

1. You must evalue. Renoval-kit first acid to clean rust and after cover with epoxy or similar.
Light rust introduce a chain or nuts or both and shake it. Clean after.
You use a filter in the fuel pipel.

2. Internet MZ shops.

3. Battery (original electric system) 6V 12A for start and run.

4. Fuel gasoline minimum octanage rating 88 RON/RM. For example, no problem for 95 or 98.

5. Two stroke oil in tank manual said 50:1 . Controversial: most riders mix his own percentage.
Injeccion oil only in MZ ETZ models.

6. New good tyres and inner tubes. You choose.

8. Kick start, no magic button.

Chain cover is the best system for long life. To oil the chain you can do it open de right engine cover.

Ok thanks very much. I have no spark at this point maybe its because the battery is completely dead? Fuses look ok, electrical connections seems ok.

I will buy a new battery and chack the spark.

The tank is off and being cleaned, the carb will be cleaned and if i get spark i will post back.

Ok i plan to ride it this weekend, anything anyone can tell me about the rear end that I should know? I'm asuming because its chain drive its relatively safe to ride a short distance? But you know what happens when you assume.

at the front where the chain cover rubbers joins the motor there should be a cover over the front chain sprocket
remove this and rotate the wheel as an other person sprays oil or grease on the chain

the axle is loosened and the nut on the other side is then loosened to adjust chain
the nut on the right is not a direct connection to the axle

ie you remove the axle completely and the brake drum and the wheel comes off like on a drive shaft bike
to remove wheel the nut on the right side.. is not loosened
it holds the sprocket and other things on the swing arm and is loosened to adjust chain tension
it only comes off when you take the whole thing apart to clean it and replace the rubber covers

Ok I statrted using 50:1 and I hear a slight knock now, when letting off the throttle, is that normal?

I also had leaks in the brass floats in the carb so I soldered them and they seem to be ok but it doesn't run well and dies after a few blocks. I thought it was flooding but now I think its starving for fuel. I also like at 7000 ft altitude.

Smokes now quite a bit.

the floats will need adjusted or replaced after the solder job they usually weigh tooo much
so carb is in an overfill condition...

this item (float) is usually shot if its old as the changing air pressure over many years makes them crack
unless stored in a baby food jar

ping is a problem with this bike and speeds over 55 are in an area near self destruction

these bikes have a ping problem at high speed that i do not think any one has ever sorted out
but once you sort it out you will have fun with it .....

7000 ft altitude. may have to go to a bigger or smaller main jet 6000 and up
maybe some one with high altitude.experience will chime in
