New Rider: `01 Skorpion Tour in CA

Postby 6mazatl » Tue Oct 07, 2008 3:26 pm

Hi Riders:
This summer I bought my first bike = 2001 Skorpion Tour. I am on it every day and I love it! ~58 MPG has been very nice for the budget. I am in the San Francisco Bay Area, a student at Stanford.

Thanks for this community.

While I am here: Everything on the bike is sweet except . . . the turn signals keep blowing the fuse!! - after about 10 minutes of riding and signaling after fuse is replaced (I have not done a scientific study, but I think it happens more when the the throttle is open to varying degrees and the clutch is engaged or bike is in neutral, causing a power surge?). I have had the mechanics look at it 3 times, but at $95/hour the money adds up and it hurts. . . they have replaced some wires in the signal lights, the turn signals themselves, and some other small stuff but the problem persists!!! I am upset with their service, I worry the problem is deeper, and they are too lazy to look into it. I am the 3rd owner, and the other two guys had the same problems and "lived with it".

** Anyone had this happen with this model, could tell me what is up? can recommend someone who can get to the bottom of this and repair for a starving student?

sending my best energy for your road,

Can't help with the fuse lesson, but that's a tidy looking bike.

Have fun!

there are diodes in the circuit for the neutral lamp and switch and if it shorts out can cause fits that are hard to find
these bikes are bad about poor wires and corroded connector plugs....also look for bare wires under gastank
pinched when some one had it off and on ..

Sweet ride. I often thought my bike (2000 Tour) would look sweet that very color. I had no idea they made it that color. Wow! Have fun on her, be safe.

Thanks everyone. I will start looking at this problem more carefully on my own first, all the while looking for help. I will keep you updated.

Tidy bike :D Hate electrical problems... have cost me money and time off the road a few times and a pain to track down where the problem lies. Good luck with sorting it out.

FWIW - and I'm not an electrician (I'm a mechanical engineer, so I do things slowly and logically - and the easy way  ), I had a simlar problem with friend's bike a few years back. The indicators would sometimes flash at double rate -then blow the fuse, and sometimes not.

I found the problem by substituting, in turn, the complete feed wire for each indicator, simply disconnecting the original and taping the replacement carefully in place each time so the owner could ride it for a day or so - until the fault occurred. I got lucky, it was the second wire I tried - right-hand rear feed damaged somewhere inside the main harness. I simply severed the offending cable at each end of the bike, soldered in a replacement length (which I taped to the main loom) and the bike's still running fine.

To some I accept this might seem a crude method of fault-finding, but it sure saved a frustrating day poking around with an avometer while shredding the main wiring harness to try and trace possibly faulty and elusive wires. I've since used the method sucessfully on other weird faults and it works rather well. ;-)

Edit: Very nice bike BTW. Cracking looking machine! :smt007
