etz 251 oil leak ?

Postby canona1 » Sat Oct 11, 2008 12:04 pm

Hi, i'm new here and have a question about an etz 251.
I am about to buy a turkish 251 from 1997 with 10000 kilometers. It is for sale for 250 euro.
I took of the right engine cover to find out if it had electronic ignition and to my surprise the cover was mounted with silicone paste and there was clean oil (maybe gear oil) coming from behind the cover. Is this normal or is there an oil leak. The alternator part was clean and there was only little oil there. Possibly i need to change the seal behind the sprocket. Can i change this seal from the outside or do I have to take the engine apart ?
Can anyone give me some advice ?

Hello canona1!

In my country a ETZ 251 10000 kms for 250€ is a good price.

The oil can be chain oil, close chain cover.
A little oil sweat don,t be problematic.
You don,t overfill engine oil capacity.
Bearing wear, up and down movement in the sprocket for bearing radial clearance.
Tighten well the retaining screws of oil seal cap.
You can change oil seal very easy from the outside:

Thanks Manuel,
Next week I will pick up the Bike and then I can get a good look at it.
This afternoon i saw it for the first time. It hasn't been running for almost two years. We connected a battery, checked the spark and after a few kicks it started. I think the carb needs cleaning but 250 euro is a good price (here in Belgium too)

regards Pascal.

250.00 EUR = 338.014 USD
here in my area that is very good ---most used bikes if its all there nothing major needs replaced
but tires or battery its 500usd and up even if its an old one

Can you be more specific about where the oil was? The alternator cover covers basically two compartments. The one on the right is the alternator and the one on the left is the engine sprocket. If there is oil leaking from the one behind the alternator, that would be from the main seal. If there is a significant amount of oil in the chain area, it could come from the sprocket oil seal, neutral switch or even from the grease on the chain. Or perhaps the chain was oiled rather than greased. Loosen the engine nut first after knocking off the tab washer, then you loosen the chain to give you wiggle room, remove the split link then let the chain hang down. I would recommend locking the rear wheel so it cannot be turned by accident after loosening the sprocket nut. If you should roll it off it's stand by accident it will smash the rear chaincase.

Once the sprocket is removed there is a cover retained by counter sunk screws, they may be covered by grease so wipe this away carefully, the cover plate will have a gasket and perhaps some shims underneath it. It's easy enough to push the seal out by immersing the plate in very hot water and the pushing out the seal, you can fit a new one just as easily. Please remember to refit the shims and gasket. The gasket packing is important, please reuse it. If not you will have to readjust the gear spacing by removing the correct shim.
After you have reassembled everything pack in some fresh grease around the sprocket and chain.

It is important to note that the chain is run a little loose. The chain gaitors makes it a little difficult to adjust but if it is adjusted too tight you can easily destroy the gearbox, chaincase etc.
