One Lap, One lung

[Old Way]

Since the sixties I've wanted to ride a single cylinder bike around the U.S.
LA to Seattle to Portland ME, to Miami. to San Diego and back to LA, one lap. Within the next two years I plan to do this, the problem was finding a bike up to the task. Not to many singles in the US and BMW is way more money than I want to spend. I looked at older SR Yamaha and XL Honda's when I remembered the MZ Scorpion line used Yamaha power.

My question is, will there be any new Scorpion Tour or Traveler bikes left in the US in a year, possibly two years? And do you think this bike is up to a 9,000 mile three week excursion? The bike will be loaded to the maximum carrying capacity.

when i was at there shop these guy's had a 97 Traveler
NOS on the floor i think it had less than 10 miles on it
its a blue color

i would def. be confident riding this engine around the country. hell, I would ride a RD350 around the country too!!

I sort of tried that once. I rode and RZ350 from NYC to Daytona then from Daytona to Virginia. On the way home I blew a waterpump seal and had pancake batte rin my gearbox. I got lucky and hooked up with a racing buddy who was able to jam it in his van. This was pre-cell phones and he just happened to pull in to the rest area maybe an hour after I limped it there.

Seeing as it's the Yam 660 engine used by thousands on trans continental trips in the XT chassis, why not? The frame and other parts are robust enough for anything.

My only reservation would be the standard headlight-it is simply appalling (or is mine a duff one?). The Yamaha FZR400 RRSP headlight is far, far superior, and is a diect, no modification swap. but just you try getting hold of one...........

Thanks for the info. I've done a few cross country rides on a Goldwing and twice on my VTX. I don't plan on riding at night but extra lighting is better in the daytime anyway. I've been thinking of makeing this a solo charity ride for the American Lung Association. I manage a distribution company and have customers all over the states, maybe get donations from them on the way and set up some local tv or radio while going through towns to raise awarness of lung disease. My father died from it and my mother and my in-laws all have emphazima.

My mother and her sister both died of emphasema, and my father died of a smoking related heart problem. Anything you can do to help people suffering with this terrible illness deserves support.I wish you a lot of lick . and I am sure that any of the 660 MuZs would do the trip with no probs.

I have done a lot of long distance solo touring in the past. I haven't in a long time and the idea is tempting more and more. I might go for it and od a very long ride on my Mastiff one day. But if you go for the ride stick around I am sure many like me might open my doors (both house and garage) and offer you and your steed a place to sleep.

I am sure, I wouldn't have big problems on this journey with my Baghira. The Skorpion is a good bike too. In the old american MZ-Forum, a user told us something about his MZ Traveller. He had 100 000 miles on it and it was in an excellent condition. Only the water-pump was faulty.

Your trip would be a nice challenge.... but too expensive for me to do the same.
Therefore I prefer traveling in Europe.
