Clutch Question?

Hi All

My 1000s is all OK under normal driving but as soon as I open up, the clutch slips. When changing the oil I opened the engine cover and inspected the plates, but not knowing much about the clutch plates I do not know if they are worn or still OK.
Maybe something else to check or do, maybe the clutch lever's piston is faulty?

Does anyone have some ideas on how I can go about here?

Hi Guys...

The oil is Castrol Magnatech. I've previously tried a fully synthetic but this caused the clutch to slip?

I have no prob. changing the plates if they are the prob. but as the parts are not available locally I need to get them from Grahams or buy them locally from another manufacturer. So, winch bike's plates will fit the 1000s?

Help me with a few choices of what oils I can use, I've tried some fully synthetics and it make the clutch slip even more, can hardly drive the bike.

How many miles do you have on it? Original owner? Original friction discs and springs? Are you sure you re-assembled things correctly? Did it slip prior to all this? I'd remove the plates and clean/measure them thoroughly and measure the springs(all the specs are on page 297 of the service manual) and then run the same oil from there on out. I've been using full syn Mobil 1 15w-50 for cars and have had no clutch issues in over 30,000 miles. I've stayed with the same oil to avoid this scenario.

A few thoughts: As mentioned the problem with some car oils is that they contain friction modifiers to improve fuel economy. These will cause grief for wet clutches. Magnatech may have friction modifiers; it may be worth asking Castrol the question. Many car engine oils are suitable for bikes and offer better performance/dollar than motorcycle oils as bike oils tend to be lower volume niche products. I've used Shell Helix Plus 10W-40 over the past 10 years in many bike engines and never had a problem with clutch slip. Look out for the JASO MA spec on oil packs as this that shows that the oil is suitable for wet clutches. Also ensure the oil viscosity is right for the ambient conditions. Don't use anything less than a 10W (ie not 5W, or 0W) as they will be choka fill of Viscosity Index Improvers (VII's) and will shear down quite quickly in a bike gearbox. Synthetics, as a rule, have a superior Viscosity Index (and so require less VII's) and better resistance to oil stress (temperature, age, shear etc). Generally with engine oils you get what you pay for. Semi-synthetics have many of the benefits of full synthetics, but at a lower cost. You might get away with an oil change and cleaning your plates with something like Brakleen.

Thanks guys, will drain all this weekend, measure the plates accourding to the service manual, clean the plates and replace the filter and oil! Will try the Shell oil mentioned above.

Hi Chaps, Was told last year by Dave (Ex Pleasleys M/C Mansfield where I got the ST) that the clutch is as per GSXR. Haven't needed to check this out yet and am running on the expensive Silko full syn 10w/50 racing. (probably OTT but as they do say............it's cheaper than metal)
Also weaker clutch springs were a feature of the later 1000S model. Regards J2T
