rear wheel bearing question..

I just got around to replacing the rear tire. Took the wheel off and bits of metal fell out on the chain side of the rear axle. Turns out that the bits of metal were parts of the cage of the bearing that lives in the sprocket. Is this a common bearing. Anyone know the cross ref for this?

Yep, common bearing. I just replaced mine. It's a 6302-2RS or 6302-2RSH (neoprene rubber skirts). Best quality brands are SKF or INA.

You're welcome Ryan. FWIW, the outer cages on my rear wheel bearings looked about like yours. I think you got to them just in time as I did. How does the cush drive rubber look? Mine was fine. The manual recommends cleaning it up then douche it down with a lubricant when reassembling. I used a silicon spray and it worked well.

BTW, what tires do you go with?

Yeah, I've checked the rubber spider looking thing. Got a new one off Disney but the old one looks no worse for wear. I guess I'll just hose it down with silicone spray and reinstall.

I've got to thinking on why this bearing failed like it did. Maybe the lithium grease that I packed in the chain tubes pushed out the hi temp wheel bearing grease that I had packed in it when I changed the tire last. Or, do these bearings require a maintenance schedule in the hundreds of miles not thousands? I can't find any interval figure for this bearing in any of the books that I have. Maybe I should just make it a routine to pack this bearing every so often.

As far as tires, I settled with another set of Cheng Shins scored on the 'bay at a song. I just filled up on heating oil for the season so that was a deciding factor in the selection this time around.

The originals are open bearings, thus require periodic maintainance, that's why I went with the sealed neoprene bearings. I'm lazy..........

have not looked close at how it all goes together and works back there but
getting nasty on the wrenches when putting it together can be a problem on some bike rear ends
i did notice that this rear end works different than any other i have ever had
in the way the bearings are tightened

The 6302-2rs bearings came in today. It looks as though they are the bearings that fit in the wheel itself (in the brake drum). Do you happen to know the number for the bearing(s) that are pressed into the sproket housing? The ones next to the speedo drive gear.

The sprocket housing bearings are the 6004 series. Replacements are either the sealed 6004-2RS (2 rubber seals, preferred) or 6004-2Z (metal seals).

Thanks. I was going to post a cross ref question for the drum side just before these arrived. Are the fronts the same # as the drum side rear (6302-2rs)?

Yes. The 2 fronts are the 6302 series. Haven't replaced these yet though as they still look good.

For the two wheel bearings (6302), I just tapped them out using a brass punch from the inner side. They came out easily. Then tapped each side back in w a socket that fit over the outer bearing shell. I have not done the sprocket (6004) bearings yet though. Please let me know how it goes on the sprocket bearings. Thanks

got the rear wheel on. New tire, bearings, sprockets and chain later. I've noticed the bike tracks straight as new now and no jumping speedo needle at speed. That must be a warning signal that the rear bearings are about shot.

The rear axel bearings are no big deal. It helps to have a bearing press though.
