rectifier/regulator bad or not?

Postby SeattlePaul » Sun Jul 24, 2011 10:42 pm

Greetings,
Had my charging system checked during 5K mi. Service because my 2002 RT125 eats batteries. They said to replace the recto/reg, because the charging system was "weak". Wanting to confirm b4 shelling out $$ for the part, I checked voltage at battery teminals, running, batt freshly charged (it was low @ shop). Hovered around 13V @ 3000rpm, up to 14V @ 9000, with lights an everything. That's only half a volt off spec. Think it's worth buying the part? I'm skeptical. I have to take it somewhere else to check the connectors & wiring--can't take off tank where I live, and that stuff is under the tank. Advice?

rectifier/regulator
unit is on the bottom of the air box
and mine died the first day i had the bike out after
picking it up from dealer july 22 2002
and on the mz oem replacement the plastic connector plug died
about 5 years later
i carry a spare on long trips it from a Honda cx500
its a 3 wire unit plus sens wire but works fine
using only 2 wires
i find battery quality to be a big problem with my bikes

Question is, does 13V@3000 RPM/14V@9000 RPM indicate a failed unit, or just dirty/loose connections? I think I better check the connectors first.

yes check ALL the connectors first.

crud in the connectors has been a big part of the problems on mine

working on my turn signal switch right now
its been used a lot and is very dirty in side
it is very humid where i live
dave

i will put a volt meter on mine and see what it does
when i get it out side... i do not start bikes in side the shop
as its part of my house and stinks the place up
