Hello all,

I just wanted to say Hello to every one on the forum. I am from Ireland, but am living in California in Berkeley since 5 or 6 weeks ago. I bought a Skorpion today so I guess I will be reading lots of things on the forum about maintenance etc. The bike is in great condition, but needs some work on the carbs, a new brake lever and I think I will get a qualified mechanic to give it the once over before I start riding because I am new to motorcycling, let alone maintenance. But the carbs and brake lever I will do myself. I want to get good at doing all the maintenance on my own, but as its my 1st bike I want to make sure its road safe. Look forward to chatting to you guys and learning as I go. Sorry in advance for any stupid questions!

Hey, welcome aboard. No such thing as a stupid question although some of us tend to get a little tetchy with being used in place of a manual. That said I cannot think of anyone on this forum that isn't too happy to help. (Which is why we call come here so often)

So which model did you get and what needs doing with the carb? The lever is nothing to worry about. Speaking of brakes, if you can get a Brembo caliper off a Mito it is a direct swap and it will tranform the braking. The Grimeca on the front tends to be very severe (on or off)

Hi old dog,

As you can see the bike is a 2001 Skorpion Tour. The back brake caliper had already been replaced by the owner, but I may very well look into doing something with the front. I really want to learn how to care for a bike and maintain it in top condition, so I'm up for any jobs like that. I must get myself the clymer manual for the bike or something like that which can direct me with repairs. I've seen a few vids on youtube for cleaning the carbs and they're very good but its good to have details of the specific bike no doubt, especially starting out. I think the carbs are just gunked up and need a clean. When the bike is started from cold, if you turn the throttle, the engine cuts somewhat (once she's warm, there's no trouble) and I'm told this is a carb thing. The owner said as much and suggested the carbs would need doing before long. I think as soon as that is put right the bike is near perfect. It only has 6000 miles, has been garaged all its life and has been well taken care of. My room mate said the single cylinder makes it sounds like a lawn mower but I love it!

i bought one used that had 5825 miles on it
after running it a bit i think most of its problem was the
motor had not been ran enough to get it broken in and the rings seated
it had averaged about 490 miles a year till i got it


rule number 1 "do not let others ride your bike or it will be junk or wrecked in short order"
i do not ride other peoples bikes and they do not ride mine
that rule works real good had only 1 hauled in wrecked in 56 years

I went in search of a clymer manual for the bike today but none exists. After doing a bit of searching on this website I found this link: http://www.mzskorpion.net/page10.htm

It's supposed to have the repair manual for the Yamaha xtz660 in there but I can't upload it and some of the other links are the same.

Any Skorpion owners who had this problem? What do you guys use as a repair manual. Also if the repair manual is for the xtz660 engine only, what about directions for when you're repairing brakes, suspension, or any other parts of the bike that aren't the same as an xtz660?

There is a manual , that was available through mz years ago.you should be able to download
from the site you tried.
on that note,the engine as you know is an xtz660,it has the same top end as a Raptor
660,and many many were built,it is bullet proof...
as far as the rest of the bike,there is nothing at all mysterious,same procedures for brakes
shock etc as many other bike,,i would say a manual is important for torque specs.
you may want to join mzog on yahoo as there is a ton of downloadable stuff for repair
etc.
