Module 2 passed.

Postby mirmay » Fri Jul 20, 2012 8:35 am

Today is a good day. Passed my motorcycle module 2 test on the '87 ETZ125. Good result, only 2 minor faults. I have to say that I can't help thinking these training places are not always necessary. with having very little disposable income I was unable to take professional instruction (£170+ per day average) so embarked on practising in the evenings and wisdom of friends with bikes. It's all about common sense, looking well ahead and thinking "WHAT IF........"

So, anyone contemplating taking their test, go for it but don't be hoodwinked by the training centres.

Also, a funny thing happened on my way to the test....
This bike I bought off ebay 12 months ago as a bit of a basket case has run very well - until this morning, the day of my test! Test centre 4 miles from home, test time 9.37 am. 3/4 of a mile from test centre at about 9.20 total engine death. Just died. Oh joy thinks I. Luckily I keep a small pouch containing basic tools and spares strapped to the back grab rail which I nearly left at home for the duration of the test but decided to leave in situ. Just as well. The condenser retaining clip had vibrated loose and the wire from the condenser was earthing out. A quick and easy fix and I made the test in time. this is why I like these soviet cars a nd bikes, designed to be fixed at the roadside.

Congratulations, it was a lot easier in my day, you learnt to ride by falling off, until you stopped, then took your test. Cheaper, but a lot more painful :D

Congratulations! Im also of an age when there was no theory tests and the test consisted of riding round some roads with the instructor watching from the road side and at some point jumping out in front of you. Did mine on a 1951 Sunbeam S8 outfit ( no I'm not THAT old, I just always liked old bikes) and the instructor still made me do the slow riding test. After he had given me my pass certificate, I said the bike will do it itself... screwed down the steering damper, kicked the bike into life selected first and the bike chugged down the road on its own with me and the instructor walking alongside. Happy days!

"and the bike chugged down the road on its own with me and the instructor walking alongside"

my R50S has to have a person on board ..but you can ride it with no hands on the Bars

oh for the days when they knew how to really build a MOTORCYCLE

Thanks guys. I am also of an age where if I had taken my test as a youth there would have been no theory tests ( I'm 50) but went straight for my car licence when I left school. I am now doing the mid-life crisis thing and doing what I should have done 30+ years ago.
Bumped into an old friend I haven't seen for a few years (same age as me) recently and as we chatted, it transpired we had both embarked on the mid-life-get-a-bike path. He made the point that if we had had bikes in our teens it was likely that one or both of us would not have been there to reminisce as we lost so many friends back in the day when size restrictions didn't exist and tests were easier!
Sobering thought.

the problem i have with the size thing is my rt125 will run circles around my 1953 r51/3 except on top
speed
the rt125 runs out of go get um at about 50 to 55 and has 15 very weak hp
the r51/3 500cc 24 hp will do 80+ on a flat road
both suffer really bad on hills

now the R50S from 1963 will flat scare you it will run 100plus all day long
did 1428 miles in 22 hours on it once in my younger days
so its in some ways better but the motor needs redone about ever 75,000 miles
where the r51/3 has well over 200,000 and going strong
dave
oh by the way the saxon tour has a great motor 500cc rotax
but the frame and tire selection for it
make it a daily driver but not a summer trip bike
the ride is poor and stiff but the handling is good but a quick steering bike
