If the "huge not" is on the bottom of the spring that you are talking about, that is used to set the pre-load on the spring. This is used to set the "sag". It is the single most understood concept of suspension tuning. This will accomodate, to a varing degree, differnent rider weights. Tightening (compressing the spring) will increase when the spring first starts to move. It will not change the spring rate - in other words it will not affect how the shock "bottoms out". The 125's are to simple (read cheap) to offer compression or rebound dampening.
