Hi - another newbie uk

Postby Windmill » Wed Jan 02, 2013 7:00 am

Hi all, recently acquired (through the kindness of a friend) a 96 reg Skorpion Sport and this seems to be the place to be :D Looking forward to getting back on the road after a kind of break from bikes, last was K100RT 15yrs ago or so. Skorp reminds me of the XBR I had in late 80's, lovely big single and all the Brit stuff I owned in the 60's onwards. Needless to say it has it's problems hence my joining.

It's complete and runs great after carb fettling but oh dear it's had amateur electricians at it and the dreaded green fungus in the loom  I've managed to find various wiring diagrams but mostly US spec which seem to vary? the only uk one I found is pretty fuzzy and not in colour. Having said that it has a kmh clock with mph stick on tags so may not be uk spec either? the vrd doesn't suggest it was imported other than at new though. Could anyone point me at a good one with clear colour coding?

The problems include a butchered instrument light loom, various cables cut and half removed etc. neutral light switch lead in the main loom seems to be replaced with a different colour and although I've found one back current diode (green furry and shorting) internally in the loom the second one is hiding? Only problem is I found a badly joined lead near the diode I have found and I wonder if the second has been cut out........ Has anyone experience of replacing these and if so what spec are they? any clues as to the location of the second would be great too. I don't think it is terminal as all electrics work with the exception of the instrument panel & rev counter. Have read loads on the "reliabilty" of the tacho's but will address that once the main wiring is sorted. A replacement loom would be lovely of course but I daren't ask for a price, was quoted £192 for a tacho, don't think I'll bother :( Any advice or comments would be much appreciated, it will ride again if I have to completely rewire it! Thanks , Windmill.

Well, one more Skorpion back on the road, electrics sorted, runs great, flew thru Mot :D All I need now is the rev counter sorting sometime and a little less snow

Yes, must admit when I was told it was an MZ I was thinking practical, square & ugly, as in 60-70's types (sorry you guys  ) but was amazed when I saw it. Well pleased with it and Black always looks good on bikes or cars. Will be prettier by the end of the year, haven't really cleaned it up much yet but it doesn't look half bad for it's years - wish I could say the same for me............

Interesting........a good reason for trying to keep it standard if there are so few left? My log book only says MZ, no mention of skorpion though, so maybe there are more than they think :?: Whatever, not a bad write up and borne out by the rides I've had on it to Mot & back. As soon as the white stuff goes and the roads become a bit drier I'll be out there :D

Keeping it standard? What's that??? Lol! I've been modifying my bikes since I yanked the seat off my Big Wheel and learned to kneel on it going downhill (made it easier to jump off right before the inevitable crash...).

Done a fair bit of that too, especially when in my teens but more a case of having no money - so anything went that worked or nearly  Still remember shooting my old foreman in the leg with the end of a reclaimed reverse cone megga when my Bonnie backfired  went off like a cannon and I think he's still looking for me :(

These days I'm more boring, restoring more than anything else. Besides, plain and workmanlike does it for me. This may not go down well, but am I the only one that thinks a lot of the modern bikes are too pretty and well......kind of effeminate looking? :?: I know they are all much more capable, faster and reliable than of old but If I'd turned up with a bike with pink/orange/etc reflective stripes/decals in the 70's I would have been very lonely  And as for some of the leathers I see people in............
